Been practising yoga now for over 2 years, 4to5x a week and it is a marvellous way to deal with my anxiety and helps regulate my breathing too. It also helps me with my global fitness and core strength. You don't need a gym or instructor although it can be good socially to join a class, but you can equally buy a DVD and practice in your own home.

Have you found any definite evidence that it helps with afib - I can certainly understand the relaxation benefits but I wonder if it has any real utility with respect to afib - I have the paroxysmal form so it's only intermittent but I wonder if the benefits of routine yoga might help me to lesson the frequency (or ideally stop them) of attacks

No empirical evidence but anything that relieves stress and anxiety has got to help manage AF.

Thanks for the reply - in my case, it can sometimes work in reverse since I have a low heart rate and there is some evidence that can be a factor in vagally mediated paroxysmal afib though the jury is still out on whether natural relaxation methods that further slow the heart rate might trigger an attack but I certainly agree with the relaxation benefits

My daughter is a certified yoga instructor so I sent her the link. She responded back saying, yes, yes! For a very long time she has been begging me to take a class. I have been afraid that I can't do it and also may trigger my PAF.

As of five years ago I was what they call a gym bunny in the US. I went to the gym and did aerobic classes six days a week. I moved to a new state and kept putting off joining a new gym. I have to admit I feel very weak and unfit now. I do believe that even with PAF our bodies need exercise.

I am going to try a yoga class. Thank you for sending this post as it was the push I needed. I will keep you posted as to my progress. Hopefully I will start feeling like me again. If it triggers an attack so be it. I'm more powerful than my AFib! Gracey

I've been doing yoga for some 8-10 years I love it,

certainly wouldnt recommend it when in Af or say it prevents episodes of Af but its great for everything else, for me its always hard work and some positions I will never be good at, thats the domain of the 20 year olds :-(

I started yoga to help me with my AF. So I would encourage the practice of yoga to anyone in AF especially if they are breathless as it teaches 3 part breathing. There is yoga for all levels and I would encourage only poses and practice that is comfortable to you.

I also do Yoga, just once a week, my instructor concentrates on breathing and core strength, nothing fast so we do not even break into a sweat. I love it and although skeptical of the 'spiritual' side to begin with, now take a full part. I am sure the more I give myself over to it the more relaxed I feel.

My AF is so much better whether due to Yoga or medication who knows but it is good, I recommend Yoga to everyone, young or old, fit or not. But make sure you get a good instructor.
