I have read that you can be prescribed 2.5mg x 2 a day as a long term treatment. Is anyone on this as a maintenance dose ?

Hi Elaine, yes I am on 2 x 2.5mg per day but I think it is because I am around 8 stone 9 lbs and I had a bleed around 2 years ago whilst on aspirin. My EP advised this dose and I am quite happy with it, best wishes

Thanks. I am 53 kg and feel I should be on a lower dose. I've had one incident of AF over four days recently. I accept the importance of keeping blood thinner but not keen to be on high level of medication if not needed

I was on 5 mg 2/day but the cost went way up so I started taking only one a day. I've recently started splitting the pills so I'm taking 2.5 mg 2/day.

Here's the reason, other than my cost going up to $600/year:

After my second ablation last May, Dr Cardio/EP says I have a 2.2% chance of a stroke. Each 5 mg of apixaban per day reduces that risk by 0.7%. So taking 5 mg/day reduces it to 1.5%, and 10 mg/day reduces it to 0.8%. I'm pretty comfortable with any of these figures so I could probably just drop it entirely.

Your place on the statistical charts may, of course, be different.

Thank you. You make some good points and of course here in the UK we have the luxury of the nhs and largely free prescriptions.

Wow ... free apixaban? This stuff costs $400/MONTH! in the US. That's over $13.00 PER PILL. But that's just the tip of the drug-lunacy iceberg here.

Yes, I am on 2.5mg Apixaban twice a day. My GP was not happy for me to have the higher dose. I weigh 57kg, am 72 years old and have had some slight bleeding on warfarin. Hoping the change to Apixaban might improve things but it is still early days only been on it for a month.

I would prefer to be on 2.5 Apixaban twice a day. My GP said he would prescribe that but just was not sure it would give me adequate protection. I emailed my Cardiologist but he wasn't interested, just said my GP should manage it.

I am about 54 kg, though that is an increase on what I would expect to be and nearly 65 years old.

I have been on it for 13 months and very wary of a bleed, my AF only lasts for seconds/minutes when it occurs. Seems a good point to be on a lesser dose.

You and I both Forestime. My onset was Xmas I too am 65 and same weight. Echocardiogram on Monday. Cardiologist I think keen on 5mg x 2 but I am going to press the request again and try to j set stand rationale for larger dose. I'm not keen on meds for the sake. Like you wary of bruising and bleeding risks. I'll keep you posted I like this site. Are you in the South East. I'm Romney marsh by the way. Full time working psychotherapist

Hope all goes well with your echo. I used to bruise a lot more when I was on Aspirin than Apixaban, it's the internal bleeding I'm so wary of, the one you can't see.
