Warfarin long term side effects???
Yes, as long as you treat it with respect and have regular tests. I've been taking it for about 12 years now.
Some people report slight hair loss. I get brittle nails otherwise eleven years all OK here.
Hi Lainie
I suppose that for many this is one of it's biggest strengths, warfarin has been prescribed for nearly 100 years (originally as heparin) and so it's very proven and yes as you say reasonably side effect free long term.
On the other hand the NOACs are much much newer and don't have that history behind them, and that's speaking as someone who takes one.
Be well
Ian
I've been on Coumadin (Jantoven) for 2-1/2 years. My hair has thinned out, but I also take Synthroid, so it may be the cause as well. I don't have any side effects now. When I started taking it, I had a medicinal taste in my mouth. Eventually that didn't happen anymore. I stay pretty thin. Not sure if it's the Lupus or the Synthroid or the Coumadin. I don't, and won't, take steroids. Number One: The result is only temporary. Number Two: Steroids DO have major side effects! I deal with the symptoms. So far, it's been four and a half years. I'm not getting better - just older.
There is one major side effect for long term use: your vitamin K levels will be reduced. There is currently a debate in medical circles about the link between long term Warfarin, and Osteoporosis for instance.
