How long did you wait to have your INR checked after hospital discharge for ablation?
Can't remember Bev but if you had to stop warfarin five days prior to the ablation I would have thought they would have told you when to get it checked again. Probably four or five days to start with after you started taking it again but surely no more than a week.
Hi Bob, I didn't have to stop my Warfarin because it had only just got up to 2.4 then 2.0, having been lower for ages despite high Warfarin (9 or mixture 8 & 9 mg). I checked with the sister of the clinic today as also on antibiotics which interfere with Warfarin, and she sad to keep with my appointment next Wednesday. So that will be 12 days post ablation. Can't help but worry that my levels will drop too low at this more risky time.

I would ring and say you want an earlier appointment Bev- it's not acceptable to wait 12 days at present- make a fuss if need be!!
Hi Bev - After all 3 of my ablations my INR had to be checked after 3 days . I have just checked in my Yellow book.
All the best for your recovery !

For my last ablation, 12 months ago, the EP gave me a target of 3-4, then back to normal 2-3 afterwards. Can't remember when it was tested after the op though!
I get my blood taken for the test at the GP surgery. The coag people give me a date, but to but honest, I ignore it. If I want an INR sooner, I just book an appointment at my GP and get it done. They don't even know when coag have asked for next test.
I'm just about to do it again because my INR has shot up very quickly, coag haven't altered my dose, and have asked for another test in a month's time.....no way Jose, I'm having it done next week. If I have to, I'll tell them I'm going away or whatever.
bev , I had it checked a week after.
I can't remember when I first went for an INR check after my ablation in June, I didn't stop taking it before the procedure either, but as advised here I would ring and re-book it for a date which you feel is right. How are you feeling now?

My check is due tomorrow(Thurs) and had ablation last Wednesday.
Every week for 8 weeks and then monthly
I had the usual checks for about 4 weeks, hit target and had ablation done. My INR was checked on the morning of the ablation in the hospital then same the next morning. My usual clinic check was about 4-5 days later too.
Do your hospitals do checks in their pharmacies as mine did?
Thanks everyone for your replies.
After the uncomfortable phone call with the sister at the clinic, I called my GP surgery nurse who does the Warfarin clinic there to ask her advice. She agreed with me that it seems a long time to wait, especially given my last recorded level was 2.0 on 29/10 and has been 2.4 at highest in recent months. So, left a message again for the clinic to call me back but still waiting...
Apart from that I'm not too bad. My BP is still very high, despite being back on my two meds and I suspect this accounts for my persistent headache. Also, very tired. But, the horrible heart activity seems to have settled down much more. Looking forward to planning my return to walking my dog (my daughter brings him back to me on Sunday), and back to swimming and yoga. Well, see how things go eh.
