hi all, may have to go to dentist for... - Atrial Fibrillati...
hi all, may have to go to dentist for a tooth removal have i got to stop my dose ov warfin, has any one had dental work done while on warfri
Hi Mousytrain
Yes I did and in case of tooth removal you should stop it , your cardiologist should advise you for how long since it depends on your case
In my case I have mechanical valve and PAF where the anticoagulant is highly necessary , I stopped it for two days before the dental works and I continued the next day then I did INR test to monitor the level as required
Hope the above information was helpful
Regards
Dentists always need to be informed if you are taking Warfarin regardless of what you're having done by them. A quick call to your dental surgery to let them know you are taking it and what your INR level is, is what's needed, Explain your tooth problem and ask for your dentist to contact you with advice. They are the experts in this situation.
I always remind my dentist I'm taking warfarin when I go and he'll always ask what my INR is.
Hope this helps a little .
Jean
Hi Mouseytrain
I haven't yet had an extraction, but my dentist has told me that at my next visit in 2 weeks she will probably recommend one, and she says she will send me to the hospital dentist to have it done, but probably not stop the warfarin.
It does seem to vary according to who is doing the extraction, for certain as everyone says take your yellow booklet with you to the dentist and let them know your INR.
I will come back and tell you what they say when I get to the hosital dentist, maybe the advice will be to stop the warfarin.
Be well
Ian
I had a tooth removed and did not have to stop warfarin. Talk to your dentist. Marie
Hiya Mouseytrain. I have had a tooth extraction without stopping my warfarin a couple of years ago. My dentist was only interested in my INR level which was 2.5 at the time. In fact, I am having another tooth extraction this coming Thursday, my dentist is still aware that I take warfarin after a consultation last week and my INR check is Monday.
If I remember rightly, the dentist used something in the injection and the plug afterwards that contains some sort of local coagulation? Like Marie said, best talk to your dentist really. Good luck, not the most pleasant of activities! F.
I had tooth extraction and wasn't told to stop warfarin, they used to give antibiotics years ago before any dental treatments but that has now been stopped, they say there is no need these day ! Policies change all the time !
It depends on your INR level even you are taking warfarin
Antibiotic usually prescribed for me prior to any dental works due to my mechanical valve Issue
On ANY occasion such as this, make the person treating you aware of ALL your medication and ask for advice!!!
DON'T ''play it by ear''
On ANY occasion when you are to have any sort of medical or dental procedure, make the practitioner aware of All the drugs that you are taking, prescribed or otherwise. Don't play it '' by guess or by God. ''
thanks for advice fred.
You're welcome. My dentist won't take my teeth out at any price. He sends me to the hospital.
Either he's chicken or he can't stand the sight of blood ! (I've only got three left anyway, and I'm hanging on to those as long as I can. Best of luck. )
Yes I had an emergency tooth out a couple of years ago and after it came out the dentist and I looked at each other in horror as we both realised that I was on wafarin. But although I did bleed quite a bit, it stopped and all was well.

Your dentist will know, he used to provide a prescription for antibiotics, that was stopped. I do not take warfarin the day before I have the tooth removed, no problems with INR levels. If you need more than just an extraction, you may need to be referred to a hospital.
I get bleeding gums just cleaning my teeth since starting Pradaxa I'm dreading going to the dentist. I will discuss with cardiologist before I go for sure.
Probably not as scared as your dentist. Mine hates touching me I think, even cleaning them they bleed. But he/she will be well aware of what to do so don't worry and anyway stress will upset your heart so deep breaths or wine or whatever works for you...
Hello Mouseytrain,
I got ticked off by the hospital once when I stopped Clopidogral before having a tooth out according to the patient information leaflet. Now on Warfarin and have never stopped taking this before an extraction.
BUT the only person who should advise you is the dental surgeon or your doctor. All of us are unqualified to advise on this. Ask a professional !!!!!
