Following a routine bone scan I have been found to have osteoporosis in the spine. Am going to GP next week to discuss treatment. I know bisphosphonates are likely to be prescribed but don't want to make my A.F. worse .Any ideas anyone?

Has anyone got experience of taking bisphosphonates for osteoporosis? Does it have any effect on P.A.F.?

Yes, there is some debate on this. I was actually on bisphosphonates when I was first diagnosed with AF. There has been no firm conclusions. I've looked at many analyses and there is no strong evidence at this point. Balancing the need to treat your osteoporosis I would probably encourage you to try it.

Just found a randomized controlled studies of 149,000 + patients which concluded there is a significantly increased risk of AF requiring hospitalization on bisphosphonates but no increased risk of stroke or mortality. Maybe ask about a SERM like Evista for osteoporosis prevention / treatment
