Just wondered - if you wanted an extra glass of wine with your main meal could you have extra broccolli to nullify the effect of the wine?
Is this possible?: Just wondered - if... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Is this possible?
I have an extra glass of wine occassionally but certainly don't have any extra broccoli, but maybe I am just stupid
I have never heard this before, but my feeling is that may be some urban myth. For one thing, wine (any alcohol) is dehydrating and getting dehydrated does not bode well for those of us with A.F. Some people are so sensitive to alcohol as a trigger for AF and the broccoli would not, to my knowledge, negate that. Maybe someone else is familiar with this claim??
I have a glass of wine every night. Every so often (like every week or two) we have a supper party and I probably have 4-5 glasses of wine. I've taken my INR before and after and it's not affected. I also have broccoli from time to time but I restrict it to 2 or 3 flowers.
I once had a broccoli salad (stupidly) when I was travelling in the US and my INR dropped from 2.3 to 1.5, the only time it's been that low. A double dose of warfarin had it back up again the next day.
So I really wouldn't worry about an extra glass of wine now and then. If you have it regularly any slight change could be easily adjusted in your standard warfarin dose.

Alcohol can sometimes be a trigger for my AF, so if I want a glass of wine I have a glass of water with it. This seems to do the trick, and I can have the wine with no adverse effects. I am definitely off broccoli - don't eat it if you are taking Warfarin.
