I know many of you have already been through this stage because of your cancer but a few people ( new members and a few regulars) haven’t embraced these ideas.
How many of you have probably said to yourself IF this treatment works we’re going to go on a trip or something else. Of course only a few of us ever get to that point.
Knowing how cancer can evolve when we got his diagnosis we planned a trip to Japan he listed everything he wanted to do. I told him no more IF’s it was WHEN we get there before he got to the point he could not be able to get around easily. Then Covid started and all our plan went awry.
During Covid he started going downhill so I started trying to find things he could do NOW. Since we couldn’t get him to Japan, I found the closest Japanese Garden and took him to it. Then I learned that even as an avid Buffalo Sabres fan he had never rode on a Zamboni. I found an ice hockey rink near us and arranged for him to ride on the Zamboni. Even now in his declining health he remembers the ride. So if you can DO IT NOW don’t wait until it’s too late.
Now I already had this philosophical attitude about doing things NOW because I made the mistake of not seeing Mt McKinley (yes, before it was renamed to Denali) and regretted it ever since. Hubby used to say I was kidnapping him when he was working on his MBA because I would get him and haul him off somewhere like Yosemite or to the beach or a park. I told him that we might not be “here” again.
So IF, WHEN and NOW are in your thoughts try doing NOW and lick the spoon and nourish your soul!
(Þvörusleikir- Spoon-Licker-Steals and licks wooden spoons. Is extremely thin due to malnutrition. an Icelandic Christmas character)
"What am I waiting for? There's never a perfect time, so why not now?" has become what I live by now. In April, I got my motorcycle license, and two months later, I bought a used bike that I could hone my riding skills on. Always wanted to do this and what was I waiting for? I'm not living in fear of the future any more.
Max, tell us the facts........you said "Marriage? You must still believe in Santa Claus, sweetheart?" And did she say to you: "Tesoro, come on just one more drink of this tasty wine my parents made especially for you" "That's it Caro........ drink till you drop..........oops, I mean to the last drop".......and then this famous death dirge:
Dumb Dumb De Dumb..... Dumb Dumb De Dumb....... Dumb Dumb De Dumb Dumb.....Dumb Dumb De Dumb.
Crazy man! But you are right, even if she is British she says Caro and Tesoro…we seldom speak English. Having learned spoken English in Ohio, she cannot stand my American accent, can you believe it?? Well, I think I have lost the accent after 21 years without going back to the US!!
yesI agree strongly …. From my own experience. Go … do the QOL things as early as possible. Don’t kick them down the road, thinking you’ve still got plenty of time. And , like you say, be willing to change - modify your expectations to meet your ever ( even if slowly ) changing physical conditions. This is very important.
