wow that’s a tough read for a layman. Anyone out there want to give us a “Crispr for Dummies” synopsis?

Well I have a good friend directly involved in this technique and she still gives me the look when I call it crisps instead of crispr!

This is the simplest explanation I could find!

CRISPR-Cas9 is like a molecular Swiss Army knife with a built-in GPS. The "CRISPR" part is like the GPS that guides the system to the exact spot in the DNA where there's an error that needs to be fixed. Scientists program CRISPR with the correct address by giving it a piece of RNA—a molecule related to DNA—that matches the DNA sequence where the error is.

Once CRISPR is at the right spot, the "Cas9" part comes into play—it's like the blade in the Swiss Army knife. Cas9 can cut the DNA right where the error is. This cut acts like a signal for the cell to start repairing the DNA.

Here's the clever bit: when the cell repairs the cut, scientists can provide it with the correct DNA sequence to fix the error, like correcting a typo in our instruction manual. This way, CRISPR-Cas9 can be used to edit the DNA by either disabling a faulty gene, fixing it, or even inserting a new gene.

So in simple terms, CRISPR-Cas9 is a tool that can find and edit specific parts of DNA, which is incredibly useful for things like treating genetic diseases, improving crops, and much more.

I wonder how clinical trials will be structured ? Im sure they can bypass phase2 dose escalation/toxicity. Will it take 10 years to clinical applications? I sure hope not. Will they only recruit castrate resistant patients in order to get faster results? I sure hope not.

Will we have to go through the guantlet of pharmaceuticals, radiation, chemo before insurance approves it?

Will it be used only as a standalone treatment?

Im just worried how the medical machine will try to subvert this groundbreaking technology.

From what people in the field tell me (but it's also my sensation) Big Pharma no longer has the power it had in the past, simply because technology got cheaper and 3 guys with a good idea and a new algorithm can really be disruptive. Plus now hiding a promising technology or discovery is harder as there are way too many different media (this can be good or bad according to a person's point of view 😂 ) and a scandal can drive an enormous loss of money. But it makes sense, as in all the other fields, competition increased and small players can become big players in a very short time. But that was a digression! What I know is that companies based on crispr technology are close to commercialization/production of cures (not for cancer) and they took less than 10 years.

Good Luck, Good Health and Good Humor.
