Reason I ask is one of my neighbor’s husband while under the influence of his medication almost bought a $50k boat and another time a $300k house. She found out and was able to cancel both.
Imagine what kind of mess she would have been in if she hadn’t…

Just wondering… since the current treatment my hubby is getting has been causing hallucinations and he sometimes thinks he is doing something else and he is just wandering around the internet.
I believe that if you can have a patient declared mentally incompetent to make legal decisions that most contracts can be cancelled on this basis. Did not work for my father in law who cashed in his life insurance in a demented state. But that is an insurance company with more lawyers than god.
I asked my husband about my father in law and it seems that he had not been declared incompetent at the time he cashed in the life insurance. If he had been maybe we could have reversed the request. My husband is getting a bit demented and is making stupid decisions buying scammy crap but nothing as big as a house. I can think of no way to control this other than to suggest that he check with me first, one to see if we already have what he is going to buy, and two to see if i think it is useless crap. I am an engineer and can evaluate things that go against the laws of physics etc.
You might look at what they did for my mother in-law. They filled out paperwork with the bank and credit card company that all transactions required two signatures. Hers and the person that was the family member who was supposed to get responsible for her. Like a co-signed loan. I’m not too worried my hubby will do that as our stuff is in a family trust. But on the internet and such it’s a bit different. And I know once the temporary situation of the medication is resolved I could turn off the parental controls.
Oh gosh, I can relate. My mom did that with chemo fog (1995-6) but I was never sure if it could have been the start of dementia. She put checks in between newspaper pages and bought a 3k Life Alert (cancelled for local plan). At least now we don't get paper checks, but spending is darn easy. Love the 2 signature idea. If kid protection works, I would do it. I live in a senior community where neighbors get scammed often, sending money to their "new friend" for months unless they happen to mention it to a neighbor. Rough problem. We are all caretakers here for each other.
