MO in Phoenix Area

Good morning warriors:

Several of us on here have written that Dr. Alan Bryce, at the Mayo Clinic, has moved on to another position at Another unnamed firm. I have just come off Plavicto, it failed, and obviously I'm very concerned about what the next step will be. Is anyone on here have any recommendation for an MO In the Phoenix area that specializes in Advanced prostate cancer treatments?

Any of your input would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

You're welcome. I know that we have several members who were using Dr. Bryce because one told me that he was leaving 9/23. My inquiry is up. Now we wait.

Thanks

One member who informed me a couple of months ago that Dr. Bryce was leaving on 9/23 has responded that her husband is now seeing Dr. Parminder Singh. They both like him. Dr. Singh was up to date on her husband's (stage IV) case the first time they met with him. In her words, "We feel confident." She did add, "however it sounds like he will be overbooked for a while." My group is more active in the evenings and mornings than midday. Hopefully, I'll have more.

in reply to Bethpage

Thanks Bethpage:

I have heard good things about Dr. Singh but I've been told I cannot get in to see him until the middle of November. I think he is the only oncologist that has any real experience with prostate cancer left at Mayo Phoenix. Very disappointing. Any further input would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks Tom

I just received another rec for a Dr. Wish(wdeep) Dhillon, Arizona Center for Cancer Care in Gilbert. The member and her husband highly recommend. He's an MO/hematologist. I don't see where he's a genitourinary oncologist. From his website: "Dr. Dhillon’s clinical interests include a broad spectrum of disorders including solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and benign hematologic disorders. His special interests include pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, myeloma, lymphoma, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. Dr. Dhillon also specializes in treatment of blood disorders like blood clots, anemia, platelet problems and bleeding."

Hoping to receive more names.

in reply to Bethpage

Sounds like a real generalist. Let’s hope we get somebody’s name that it was something about advanced prostate cancer.,

So appreciate your help Tom

Thank you for the info. Do you know if we need a referral from Dr Abdul (urologist/surgeon) at Mayo Phoenix, to see Dr. Singh? So far all we have heard is a referral to a radiology oncologist coming . From reading on here, it appears we need both specialists to manage treatments. Currently waiting for PSA to hit .2 for the scan to see where the Mets is.

in reply to Lokicliff

I do not know.

Bethpage profile image
Bethpage in reply to Lokicliff

I'm sorry, but I don't know the answer to that question. I admin a support group for spouses of PCa patients on FB. I simply asked for recommendations for tceinvestments because he has asked several times without a lot of feedback. I think Mayo or Dr. Abdul's office could tell you that?

We are in the same boat. We didn't know Bryce was leaving until we received the email.

I'm sure you probably saw the second email sent that stated that Mayo is interviewing candidates, so it appears they don't have a replacement for him yet. It feels like it leaves those with the more aggressive cancers in the lurch and wondering what to do.

All the best to you. Please keep us up to date on what you find out.

Desert Daisy

Thanks for your reply. I did not see the second email. I’ve been in touch with Dr. Bryce's nurse and she indicated to me that they are very shorthanded. I will keep you posted. You please do the same. I would love to see the second email if you still have it.

Thanks so much for your input.

My new Mayo MO in Phoenix is Irbaz B Riaz, M.B.B.S., M.S.. I was seeing Dr HO before he left Mayo this summer. I met with Dr. Riaz in late August for the first time. So I do not have much history with him but I liked him. I wish you well with your search.

in reply to Falcon10

Thank you Falcon

Was just notified I have an appointment with Dr. Riaz in late October. Where are you on your journey?

Thanks, Tom.

Falcon10 profile image
Falcon10 in reply to

I originally diagnosed 2011 Gleason 7 , subsequent biopsy circa 2019 Gleason 8/9; started treatment in July 2023 with a double shot of Degarelix for starters prescribed by Dr. Ho. Dr. Riaz changed me to Lupron 3 month shots which I had the first this past August; Abiraterone was added August 2023 as well. I have had no surgery or treatments until July, 2023. I took minimalistic approach, wanting to go as long as I could without treatments and associated side effects for quality of life. Symptoms and pain were starting to increase and Dr. HO convinced me to start treatment. The double shot of Degarelix in July 2023 knocked my PSA from 183 to 16.4. I have not had blood work yet after my first 3-month Lupron shot. I had some numbness in the buttock area which has gone away since starting the treatment.

Wish you well.

in reply to Falcon10

Thank you I am scheduled to see Dr. Riaz the end of October. Did he seem to be an expert on prostate cancer or more of a generalist?

Thanks, Tom.

Tom, my apologies for the delay in getting back to you. He said he concentrates on prostate cancer. It was my first meeting with him so for me a little too soon to give more insight.

Tom,

Just wondering, did you receive a portal message from Mayo? We haven't received anything yet.

Kay

in reply to DesertDaisy

I have not received anything on my portal. I also come to find out that not just Dr. Bryce left but this summer another doctor by the name of Dr. Ho left and that Dr. Riaz who is now supposedly taking over some of the patients has been on board since 1 August, I am very disappointed that I do not have any follow up with Mayo oncology until October 30. I really don’t think they care that much about their prostate cancer patient load and are just trying to cover their back sides because they have so few doctors very disappointing.

DesertDaisy profile image
DesertDaisy in reply to

I agree. It doesn't seem that they have anyone to take over who specializes in prostate cancer. We haven't heard anything at all from Mayo as to who Dwight may be assigned to. After checking the City of Hope website, it doesn't appear they have anyone here who specializes in prostate cancer either. It's worrisome.

in reply to DesertDaisy

we scheduled an appointment with Dr. Wong at MD Anderson in Gilbert Arizona. I saw him once three years ago for a second opinion and liked him but Dr. Price was still there at Mayo. I know he’s excepting patients and his nurses are fabulous you might check it out. Some people on this blog also go to him let’s keep in touch.

thanks so much,

Tom

Hello, my MO at Mayo in Phoenix is Cassandra Moore.

I am on the PSMAdditions trial and she is the MO assigned as coordinator. She is nice and listens to me but since I am on a trial, I feel that adherence to the trial instruction takes priority. So I really don’t know how she would be treating me if I wasn’t on this trial. But for her to be assigned to head up this trial at this location speaks to her qualifications I suppose.

in reply to PC-22

Thanks what is the PS MA additions trial?

Sure appreciate your input.

Thanks, Tom.

PC-22

Hello Tom,

PSMAdditions trial is a clinical trial for hormone sensitive patients receiving SOC. The Addition portion is Pluvicto which I see you have already received.

I am relatively new to this dreadful disease. I was diagnosed just about this time last year. Although I don’t post much as I am not as knowledgeable as others like yourself but I am learning.

in reply to PC-22

Hello PC 22

Just remember we’re all in this together.

Never be afraid to ask a question. The people on this site are the most caring I’ve ever been around in my life. We have one common goal. Beat the beast for as long as we can.

Good luck and God bless you
