Recent PSMA (Pylarify) PET Scan…. Covered by Medicare.

I just wanted to report that today I had a PSMA (Pylarify) PET scan at Shields Imaging/Scanning in Springfield, Massachusetts. What’s notable about this is that prior to two weeks ago, Medicare did not cover this procedure. I was told that patients had to pay for it out-of-pocket.

It appears that the scan is becoming more widely available in the USA. Moreover, the good news is that Medicare should now cover it.

PSMA PET/CT have been covered by Medicare for many months now. I had one in October 2021 and Medicare covered the bill. They pay for the 18 F Pylarify (DCFPyl PET/CT )and by the Ga 68 PSMA PET/CT done at UCLA and UCSF.

I will be having a PSMA PET scan on January 19. The Veterans Administration in Charlotte will be administering it.

The scan was originally supposed to have been a CT; but my MO prevailed and had it upgraded.

There are only 2 sites available for PSMA PET in North Carolina. Thank God, my local VA is one of them.
