Join ASCO as a Patient Advocate for Free

The American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is one of the most prestigious professional organizations for cancer research. In June they hold their Annual Meetings, held virtually on line this year. This is where some of the most important peer reviewed cancer research will be presented. Membership for physicians in ASCO costs over $800 per year! And one must be a member to log in to attend the many meetings.

However, they have a category of membership for “Patient Advocates” that is entirely Free! I consider that those members of this forum who regularly post supportive or informative messages for the benefit of others with advanced prostate cancer are certainly to be considered as “patient advocates”. So if you are thus qualified and would like to learn of the latest relevant research first hand. Then go to asco.org and become a member. Then register for their annual meetings as I have.

1. Go to am.asco.org and select "Registration," then "Register Now."

2. Login with your ASCO.org username and password.

. If you have registered for an ASCO meeting in the past, use the same ASCO.org username and password. To retrieve your ASCO.org username and password, visit asco.org/user/password.

. If you have NOT registered for an ASCO meeting in the past, create an ASCO.org username and password by going to asco.org and selecting "Sign In" in the upper right corner of the webpage.

. ASCO.org username and passwords are specific to individuals. You will only be able to register the person whose ASCO.org username and password it belongs to.

3. You will be prompted to review or add ASCO.org profile information at this point. Select "Submit" once you have finished updating your profile.

4. Once you have submitted your profile, select "Create Registration for "

5. Select "Patient Advocate" for the registration category

Checked that out and got some clarification. Need to create a member profile, username and password and some background etc. here is what Alicia from Asco customer support shared: (pic attached)

That did not display the whole message. It says “non-members who wish to enroll at this rate should send a CV or bio-sketch via e-mail to patientadvocates@asco.org “

It worked for me.

Please note the following step is required: “non-members who wish to enroll at this rate should send a CV or bio-sketch via e-mail to patientadvocates@asco.org “

It worked for me.

Nice post. Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention.

I will attempt to remember to repost it next year.

MB I would like to share your post with my cancer support group. Is that OK with you?

Good to hear from you today, albeit in hamburgers!

I did follow your advice, did send a CV, was accepted.

Then got a bill!

Consumer advocate membership: $185 the first year, then $150 per year after that.

Have I fallen for Catch 22?

Yes. Catch 22 indeed. Don’t pay. You already are a patient advocate by virtue of your contributions here and elsewhere. I never had to pay anything to access ASCO programs as a non member patient advocate. And those are vegetarian burgers for you. I hear Beyond Burgers are great. I however am a meat eater (organic hormone free grass fed) on my current ketogenic program. Kind regards sir.

Hmmm, so you are registering as a patient advocate due to posting here? Interesting. I signed up for the annual meeting on the free deal for patients, then got an email that I could be a member for free, but their membership signup didn't have a selection for "patient" and I've been around and around with customer service with them not understanding the offer they sent in email.

Thanks for sharing this. There will be a one-hour summary for patients of ASCO 2021 sometime in August. I always listen to this. Good information.
