This is one of the disadvantages of the longer range beta-particles of LU-177 over the shorter range alpha particles. Alpha particles from Radium 223 or Actinium 225 have a higher energy and a shorter range and do more damage to the cancer and less to surrounding tissue. I think the treatments that use them will prove to be more effective. The main problem with AC-225 is the damage to the salivary gland which I would expect to be worse than LU-177.

This article is way above my head but I think it’s saying that Lu-177 treatment can damage bone marrow? If so, that explains the fix my husband is in. He had two treatments in Heidelberg in May and July with no good effect and now he is failing quickly due to diminishing bone marrow. Drs thought it was simply disease going to the marrow but now it seems the “cure” he attempted will kill him as his body cannot make red blood cells/hemoglobin and the only treatment option at this point is more chemotherapy which, ironically, causes more anemia putting him on a self-defeating and dangerous blood transfusion merry-go-round. To add insult to injury, he had the “cocktail” treatment with Ac-225 and salivary glands and tear ducts are shot. He has trouble eating, choking is a constant risk and he has lost at least 15 lbs since July—and he CANNOT afford to lose weight. Why is it in life that we always seem to find out these kinds of things after we take the leap?

Dear Mohopes,

I remember reading your Lu journey in Germany. I’m sorry that you have to go through these terrible after effects which were not known before you guys started. I guess these are the issues we face when we go through new treatments that are still being experimented on.

In the meanwhile you may try to increase haemoglobin and platelets via food IF possible. I know food intake has also been an issue now. But you can always try via liquid diet. Beet root juice twice a day and Papaya juice or papaya leaf juice once a day.

I hope you will be able to find a suitable next treatment.

Best wishes.

Thank you, Cheerr. I have never heard of these foods affecting hemoglobins but I will look into it. His MO keeps chanting, "Protein, protein," whenever she sees him.

The papaya leaf is for platelets while the beet root is for the Hb.

And yes protein is suggested to improvise the iron levels. Spinach and Kale etc.

Keep trying everything!!

Thanks. Is that a fairly new development in treatment?

ITCandy, we have never heard of a salivary gland function scan. I wish we had.

I cant say that I follow all of the research detail in the paper. It could support my experience, where my 4 cycles of Lu177 completed 4y ago did not affect my erythrocyte cell count or platelets; probably because I had no bone mets. However, WBC, especially lymphocytes, were mildly depressed and typically liver function tests indicated a reasonable amount of damage (reversible). Not that any of this was apparent clinically. Incidentally, or should I say famously, 6 out of the observable 7 PC soft tissue lesions were eliminated. =Rob
