Bone Marrow Transplant Aftermath

The experimental bone marrow transplant for prostate cancer had no positive effects for me, as far as we can determine, but I keep getting new chronic side effects, which are likely explained by the bone marrow transplant. First it was loss of the ability for my body to regulate my temperature effectively, then after about six months, almost constant slight nausea and occasional sudden vomiting, then after nine months, lung inflammation (pneumonitis), which causes shortness of breath, cough, fatigue, loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss. Even if I were to be miraculously cured of cancer, I would still be a sick guy. Fortunately, all these side effects are relatively minor and manageable. Some people have serious problems from chronic graft versus host disease (GvHD) after a bone marrow transplant, so I still have room to be thankful that I don't have those.

George had his BMT in December. We had a short lived PSA response but unfortunately the scans at 4 months post BMT showed a few new possible bone mets. He is also dealing with an intermittent BK virus. Are you still under the care of the BMT team at JHH? Are you re-immunized? What is the latest on your PCa and treatment decisions?

JHH gave me all my immunizations, just like a one year old infant.

I am currently enrolled in the below trial, and am fortunate to be receiving the investigational agent, Lutetium 617.

Is the BMT team at JHH helping you with the chronic GVHD?

These symptoms are not known to be related to GVHD, so we do not believe that I have GVHD. As far as I know, there is no cure for whatever I have. There are just strategies for dealing with the symptoms. Hopefully, these issues will resolve on their own.

That didn't work for me. You can see my history in my profile.

A marrow transplant falls under the treatment category of immunotherapy. The clinical trial is described at the below URL.

In researching Clinical Trials for my husband, the bone marrow transplant opposite sex (was yours opposite sex?) came up as a current possibility. Through that I found your story on HealthUnlocked (of which I am already a member). Hot damn buddy, you are brave!!!! I hope the LU177 works for you. It is at the top of our list right now.

The Lutetium is working pretty well. Two infusions have reduced my PSA by 40% so far!
