Malecare in Bloomberg magazine article on how and why pharma funds nonprofits...what do you guys think?
Astroturfing. Old news. Set up a system where billions of dollars in profits are at stake, and people will do almost anything to protect those profits.
Well, I read the article and the section where they had your quotes... When one takes money from companies, it is often a two edged sword. One must weigh the benefits--This forum and the info provided against supporting things which may be to the company's benefit. Your approach seems balanced.
The research must continue...There is real potential IMHO--to get PCa to a chronic disease for all rather than a rapid death sentence for some.... The science is coming--just not fast enough to save more lives than currently...With some of the drugs under development, there is hope...
Thanks for your efforts, Darryl....

If some of the dollars patients pay out to pharmaceutical companies comes back to them via MaleCare, that would seem to be a good thing. I looked at the HU and MaleCare sites before registering here and felt that the special interests that contribute to MaleCare are well firewalled from influencing the primary function of aiding our patient community. I was (still am) somewhat less convinced about HealthUnlocked, as it seems to me to be a "Googleish" organization with a lot of potential for the same kind of data-mining and privacy abuse we frequently see by Google.
You can/should make your own judgements by looking here for MaleCare;
And here for HealthUnlocked:

Darryl seem to be doing a very respectable job balancing things here at APC; i.e., Thanks! As is the case for all who come to this site, I have expanded my knowledge of my disease beyond my expectations and joined a warm and sharing community of patients (and, in many cases, some of their family) in the process. I have bad mouthed the drug industry on this site several times. Darryl, you have not stopped anyone doing that. Plus you have solicited us money so the money you get from them can't be all that much. Do they ask you to lobby on their behalf?
I have been asked and have mostly rejected those requests. Maybe four or five times during the last twenty years, I agreed with the position and presented my opinion. I have also been asked to align Malecare with a policy we disagreed with and presented our contrary-pro patient- position... probably four or five times for that, too. I am pretty sure Malecare is unique in that. Those are separate from the “sign on” letters the article discusses ...those letters usually have less value than the article implies.
