Weight loss

Hello All,

My guy was diagnosed with stage IVB on August 10th. 2018. Mets to bones and lymphnodes. PSA was 95. At time of diagnosis he weighted 270. For the first two months, we drastically changed his diet and he started dropping weight (i.e., organic veggies and grass fed bison and chicken). This last month, we have not been on a strict diet because he was losing too much weight. In fact, he has occassionly been eating ice cream. Or problem is he is continuing to lose weight. He weighted 210 this morning. Why is he continuing to lose weight? His last PSA (two weeks ago) was 0.3.

Thanks in advance!

Connie

What sort of treatment plan is he on ? ADT probably, maybe even chemo ? Sometimes this can suppress the appetite. A big diet change as you described will also greatly reduce calories resulting in rapid weight loss..While advanced cancer causes weight loss his cancer seems to be under control.. So ask his MO for any ideas and then as Nalakrats said, see your GP and do some blood work...How does he FEEL at 210 compared to 270 ?

Thanks! He is on lupron, zytiga, prednisone and zometa. The drugs are causing alot of fatigue and bone pain so he has not felt well the last few weeks... we initially thought the weight lose was great... he was holding at around 220 but, within this last week he dropped another 10 lbs. He sees the oncologist on the 26th. BTW, he is 51 years old - height 6'2".

lupron is good for ones bones it decreases it in ones body. it doesn't hurt after some time to back off of the meds then go back same as meds, blood testing its all about taking it easy.

My husband is on same meds with a psa at .14 but has lost 61 lbs in the last 8 months. Started at 258 he has went from size 40 jeans to a 36. Not having as much appetite and meds make him sick some days. We are at oncologist today for more scans. We have bloodwork done weekly

Why are they taking blood work weekly? If you don’t mind me asking...

His oncologist started it once he started taking the Zytiga to watch all of his levels

Wonderful. That’s what the pkg insert states if one has “cardiac” effects or other specific issues, but no one has suggest that yet...I’ve asked for it.

The pkg insert says monthly, not weekly. I misspoke.

I had always heard weight loss is not a good sign. Obviously see you mo asap.

he's .03 the normal male who has prostrate cancer goes above 4.0 u didn't mention his height but i would say he was over wt and now u brought him down. u didn't mention what treatment he has been on fighting his cancer. some meds make u lose wt and if u go to hard to fast your not helping him. do moderate exercise and just watch everything as will as his treatment. talk to his doc get ideas from him. remember these so called oncoglogist are in my view maintenance drs. mine is a breasts doctor but unfortunately your stuck with what is out there unless u live in a big city and actually get a specialist.

Don't worry too much m'Lady. He is much too young too come to any harm (I am 78). On the treatment you mention I also lot 12 lb in six weeks, lot for a thin man (154 lb normal) but got it back after six months after stopping. I guess he has also developed a few new bowel disorders. When they clear up he will be OK. May be a consultation with Gastroenterologist ??.......just a suggestion. In the meanwhile let him enjoy his ice cream! when there is the opportunity and before he gains weight, and everybody say "don't eat ice cream or Cheesecake"

How is his appetite? Perhaps what he is now eating does not provide pleasure, therefore not eating as much. Perhaps stomach capacity has decreased substantially because of prior quick weight loss. Has sense of taste been compromised thereby causing a decrease in appetite. Has he change exercise regimen? Loss of weight overall can often be a helpful when fighting cancer, but should be investigated.

When I was on chemo and prednisone I lost weight from 178 to 153 as sense of taste was completely compromised. Height is 5’ 9”,,,down from most of life at 5’ 10”. Off chemo and taste is returning, weight now at 164,,,,which hopefully I can maintain,,,bought some new trousers and blue jeans with 32” waist.

Get it now!!!... Thanks for the clarifying...

I read all the comments with interest as I gained 80 pounds in a six month chemotherapy - hormone therapy trial (9 infusions of Taxotere and 9 infusions of Adriamycin) plus Ketoconzale and Estramustine; along with 30 mg of Prednisone daily for 180 days.
