public school has failed my daughter.

Hello everyone I’m new here I just saw the site and wanted a place to come as an outlet for my mental health and stress. Well I will start by saying my daughter was a late developer when it came to speaking and a few more things when she started early childhood learning at 3/12 my baby had made so much progress with this program. But the sad part is when she was transitioning from that program to the public school system this school had a meeting with the public school letting them know how she’s learning and will thrive in her education as well as mental and emotional abilities. Little did I know that would be the worst decision ever and she would start to fall off and everything she learned in the early childhood learning program would be a distant memory, and the best years of her educational life. My daughter from then on went to kindergarten and after that here comes 1st grade and after that Covid then after that online classes but mind you my daughter has developmental difficulties when it comes to the way she learns and mental health so Covid and online school was another setback for her and after that we moved to another school district and we brought her IEP and concerns to that district they did testing supposedly and we had a plan in place for her educational needs even got help from SSD. But I wanted her to stay back and redo the grade after Covid restrictions were lifted but I was told oh no worries we have several students that need a lot of extra help because of Covid so we’re not gonna hold anyone back. We’re just going to give them the extra help. They need to get them to what they need to be even after you recommend you want your child to repeat the grades so it’ll be a better understanding for them school they knew it was best and the parent know best child and the best education possible what they have been through so no they keep telling me she’s making progress and doing well and she will be ok moving forward now here we are in 3rd grade which I should have known because my daughter never had homework in her backpack when I knew she should have had some but I keep trusting the school so here we are now going to 4th grade and no one has said your daughter is still struggling and not making as much progress as we would like so let’s try something else nope they keep going I’m sending my daughter to school and she’s not doing her work she’s doodling, and just sitting in class because she don’t understand and a teacher didn’t think she was worth their time and effort and again I never knew this, but my daughter has been dealing with it for so long. I guess it came normal to her. She just go to school and doodle and participate in art projects that she understood, no one told me anything about my daughter not developing educational. My daughter told me in a meeting at another school that she never got the help she needed from none of theses teachers and after the private school teacher tested her I’m told my 10yr old daughter whom they were sending to 5th grade is testing at a1st grade math level??? I was so upset not just with the public school system but with myself for not knowing and doing something sooner but here we are today and I’m so lost with what’s next for my daughters education and achievements.

I am sorry the public school system has failed your daughter. No child should be ignored and simply allowed to doodle without actually completing nor comprehending the lesson/s. Usually during the annual IEP/504 Plan meetings they are supposed to let you know the expected accommodations that they will be implementing to ensure that your child succeeds. Also, email communication and progress reports usually can help you in identifying whether or not they are actually implementing those said accommodations for your child.

I personally, have two children with ADHD, one just started 10th grade and the other 4th grade. Mg oldest is in public school with a 504 Plan, taking some advance courses, but I make sure to reteach and/or sit down with him every school evening to ensure that he understands and completes the assignments. He struggles with quick processing of information, so information given all at once overwhelms him. So I make sure to break it down for him in chunks so that he can better comprehend lessons. Now, my youngest, knowing what I went through with the oldest, my husband and I both decided to homeschool him. We have been homeschooling him since 1st grade (2021-2022 academic year). There are plenty of homeschool curriculums out there that one can easily find to help their own children learn. If you can homeschool your child, I highly recommend it. You know your child better than any teacher does and you will not give up on them. Have you consider homeschooling your daughter? Perhaps until you bring her up to grade level? Or simply just homeschooling her until she graduates high school?

I recommend homeschooling as well. It was an amazing experience for us. Public schools do not have the resources to give children enough of the personal attention that some students need, and often these kids' education is marginalized and their social/emotional growth suffers as well. This happened to us, and homeschooling helped our son to flourish in every way. In 8th grade he started dual enrollment courses and ended up taking 14 of them by the end of high school age. We were deeply immersed in our community which offered a myriad of learning opportunities. We partnered with other parents and created many wonderful and significant learning opportunities. His social life was superior to his social life in school. He is now in college and doing very well.

I wish you the best, and your daughter deserves the best! It absolutely does not sound like she is receiving any semblance of a good education at your school.

OMG I am so sorry that teachers let her fall through the cracks. What kind of grades has she been getting? I would contact your sates department of education and let them know about that district. I think you should formally request an IEP in writing post haste. My daughter is in a charter school and we havent gotten a response about our request from lat year yet.
