What are the reasons they are suggesting a psychoeducational school? What are your reasons for wanting to stop it?

The “why” they want this placement and what other environments have been tried is key to offering suggestions as to how to stop it. Have they tried providing one on one support by an ABA facilitator, which is a paraprofessional trained to extinguish, modify and manage behaviors? The placement they are suggesting is more typically for children with emotional disorders often in addition to another DX with behavioral symptoms. Kids are usually grouped K-1, 2-4, 5-7 grade. It is an exceptionally restrictive environment. They must hold an IEP meeting to discuss this placement with you. Don’t give consent during the meeting. Your district belongs to a SELPA (Special Education Local Plan Area) that can help answer questions and guide you if you are questioning the validity of the placement at no cost to you. Getting an advocate or education attorney are other options. Best wishes.

Does your son currently have an I.E.P? if yes, have they tried revisiting and amending his I.E.P to meet his needs?

Do they have the data to support such a placement? According to his I.E.P, do they have the documented ABCs of his behaviors? There are certain things that have to be in place before such a drastic removal in his L.R.E (least restrictive environment) can be made.

He started a new school this year and within a few days they was wanting to change his IEP a few days after that they decided on placing him in the GNETS program here in Georgia. Now my son does have ADHD and behavioral problems but not to where he needs to be put in a GNETS school. I did some research on those schools and found out there is a lawsuit against the state on kids being placed there. They use restraints and seclusion and a lot of the kids placed there are stuck and they fall behind in their grades.. Soo confused, I just don't feel my son belongs there

They have talked about doing that with my grandson if he can't get under control in school. Just started behavioral therapy with him and the therapist does not recommend putting him in that environment at all
