Hi

I haven't been diagnosed with bi-polar but a friend's daughter was, she was on meds for about two years, then weaned off them and has been fine ever since, has two small children and no recurrence. It is a very individual thing as with all emotional problems. Also diagnoses are notoriously unrealiable...

Hi Sue,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I wonder if I could trouble you for a little more information if you know that is. You say your friends daughter was diagnosed and on meds for around two years but do you know how long it was after first approaching her doctor with her symptoms until she was given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder? Again, thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Carol xx

Hi

No, I'm sorry I don't know that. I think she was referred to a psychiatrist and seen fairly soon at which time she received the diagnosis. A GP can't make a formal diagnosis so you should be referred to a psychiatrist if they think it's bi-polar. Suexx

Hi Sue,

Thank you for replying again. I had just wondered if anyone had experience as I seem to be having a little trouble getting my GP to understand that I've been having symptoms most of my life but thank you anyway.

Hi Sue, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but it took 10 years for me to be diagnosed and it is quite normal (sadly) to take up to this length of time. In the end I asked to be referred to a psychiatrist, who this time looked at my whole history over the years and diagnosed. Sorry!

How do they arrive at this diagnosis? I was told I had it because my depression was so hard to treat. I have not had any high periods other than happy ones which occur infrequently. I am now not depressed although I have been for 10-15 years. Then they tell me I might have PTSD. so confusing. I weaned myself off meds 2 years ago. Although shaky I'm fine.
