I have just joined the community! I have not been involved as a participant in a study but have conducted research involving participants. I am very interested in learning more about the study experience from a participants point of view!

I've been in a number of different studies and trials over several years. Most of what I have been involved in have been clinical research studies and my experience with these has been very positive. I've learned some important information about my own health - for instance, I was in a trial exploring the effects of salt on vascular function and discovered that I am not one of the small number in the population who is not effected by salt. The researchers are thorough, considerate and interesting people who go to great lengths to make sure that their participants are cared for. I've also been in two clinical trials. One for a device for preventing migraine. Although it didn't work for me, it was also a very positive experience, the doctors did their best to make sure that I used the device correctly and called me back for an extra visit when things weren't going right. On the other hand, I participated in a trial recently for a new pain relieving treatment for migraine and things went badly wrong. I landed up in hospital being unable to contact the trial team for 12 hours. My local hospital didn't know how to treat me, I was in pain, confused and miserable and the after effects lasted for months with little support from the team. Even so, the staff members who I actually met were all great, I can only assume that the person in charge of the study had not put sufficient proceedures and safeguards in place in the event of something going wrong. Despite calling myself a labrat, I had never felt treated as just as source of data and not a person until that trial. I have participated in two clinical research studies since and they have both reassured me that things are generally not like that, with excellent doctors and researchers who kept me fully informed and made sure that I had no ill-effects from their proceedures.
