Thanks for the post - informative from what I've read so far. Let's hope if treatments do emerge (I have hearing loss and T) that the NHS will remember to get people who have registered with symptoms and issues back in to resolve - saying that without being optimistic.....

I bought a copy yesterday, so they’re still about. Interesting.

The article discusses how recent studies combined with older ideas have prompted reasons to rethink and propose other approaches - including studies over a decade ago.

It is a very interesting read and I want to summarize as I think it is easy for folk to think there is some miracle cure around the corner. But from my interpretation I don't think this is the case. You certainly are not going to be able to walk into a clinic tomorrow or next month and be prescribed a magic pill or device. "[Other treatment] may still be some years away from reaching the clinic. But a different approach, designed to turn down the volume of tinnitus, is already starting to bear fruit." This conclusion is based on (what appears to be unrelated) testing on animals and/or it's effectiveness is debatable or a placebo effect. I probably need to read the article in a bit more detail as it references a number of previous and recent studies and understandings of the auditory system.

The article is interesting nonetheless, so if you get chance to obtain a copy do so. From my experience understanding Tinnitus is a great coping mechanism in itself.

Firstly we know Tinnitus is complicated. People with Tinnitus may or may not have hearing loss or those with hearing loss without Tinnitus. Tinnitus can be created in those without it - however temporary this might be.

Hearing loss may or may not affect different frequencies. Research shows there's no conclusive link between the two. This is still the case, but equally it had prompted a review.

Other research mentioned in this article has found that for some, numbers are unknown, nerve damage rather than damage to the hair cells may be the cause of Tinnitus.

These findings have opened the door to look at other treatments. So maybe there is some hope for the future or at least a positive direction. My conclusion from reading the article is that we shouldn't stop using or trying known strategies. We're here for each other and we can live with this!
