Hello everyone. I have been suffering from acute tinnitus and severe hearing loss in one ear for about 6 years now. Working from home and living alone is beginning to take its toll on me as I can feel overwhelmed waking and going to bed with tinnitus. I have asked my GP about tinnitus counselling, but she has never heard of this. Has anyone had CBT to help with their tinnitus and if so has it helped? Thankyou for your support

Hi - your GP is rubbish n not following NICE guidelines for supporting you through this condition. You need to be on the books of your audiology department. I am currently on a six week group therapy with other sufferers n it means a lot to meet others with the condition. This was organised by the audiology dept but the nhs only funds six sessions- better than nothing tho. I am also down on their waiting list for cbt. It is part of their rounded approach to dealing with hearing loss n tinnitus and should be standard so you may want to ask about it.

Thank you Kenny for your reply. Yes it appears my GP is rubbish as I feel I am going around in circles. I am going to contact Tinnitus UK and see if they can advise where I can find CBT for Tinnitus in N. Ireland. Really benefiting from the advise and support in this forum. Thanks again

just to reinforce what kenenu says. You can look up NICE (National I statute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines yourself, put “tinnitus” into their search box at the top of the website page.

Also, go to the. NHS website and put “tinnitus” into their search.

It’s possible that not all areas have the support groups that kenenu mentions but there should be CBT on offer at the very least.

Thank you Happyrosie for your reply. I will certainly check out the links you posted. I am new to all of this and really benefiting from the support of this forum

My GP mentioned CBT at my appointment when I had an ear infection, hearing loss & tinnitus . She has referred me to ENT to make sure there is no underlying causes but said that CBT is something that they can offer.

I hope you can maybe ask the Practise Manager or your Integrated Health Board
