Yes, if you have constipation, then you definitely need to treat it somehow, so taking a mild laxative/ fruit/ and more fluids is ok.
You could try Laxido - it is a powder which disolves in water. Taken at night or in the morning or both if things are very difficult. It is available at many pharmacies and on-line. It is more gentle than senna. If you find it works better and the cost of a box of 30 sachets (£7.50) is too much try asking your GP to prescribe it. Also as already suggested, look at your diet and try to include more fibre - fruits, veg, wholemeal breads.
