Wits End...

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and desperately looking for answers.

Doctors have finally started to take my mum's significant weight loss seriously, yes you read correctly - my mum! She's 77 and started to lose a great deal of weight about 10 years ago. Initially we thought nothing of it, she'd gone through a bereavement and it all looked pretty natural, given the circumstances, however it hasn't stopped!

She had an accident about four years ago which meant that she was admitted to hospital, when she was admitted she was "borderline malnourished".

Countless calls and visits to the doctor have proved fruitless, because she insisted there wasn't a problem. We're now at crisis point. She's had every medical test known to man, all negative, she says she "can't eat", no reason. As of last night she was just 6 stone, she's 5' 4" tall, her BMI 14.4 - any help greatly appreciated.

UPDATE... Mum's weight dropped to around 4 1/2 stone, she's been in hospital three times since January, GP told her at last admission that she would die if she refused treatment... The treatment was observed eating, she was in hospital for a week then, because "medically" there's nothing wrong she was discharged to continue not eating.

She has regular GP and dietician visits, also falls team as she is so weak she cannot stand or walk. She has been referred to an eating disorder clinic but, because of her age, she is low priority I feel.

Watching my mum die ounce by ounce...

What a hard place for you to be in - being a mother to your mum - I had a similar situation with my mum - down to the GP scaring her over her cholesterol level - which wasn't significantly high - and at 80 did it really matter? Mum took drastic action and more or less cut out anything with fat in it - and became a fragile old lady overnight - the GP was frantic. She was diagnosed anorexic and this shocked her as I was anorexic - and she began to eat a bit more - the GP told her that her low fat diet was more harmful than the cholesterol and stopped telling her the results to the tests and that also seemed to help her begin to eat more normally again. Perhaps you need to get your mums permission to have a joint session with the GP to try to get to the bottom of the reason as to why your mum won't eat.
