I'm due to go to the dentist next month. The plan of treatment is to replace an old composite filling with an amalgam one.

My question is 'Would an amalgam filling have a detrimental effect on my SLE?' I had all my amalgam fillings removed about 30 years ago because the amalgam ones were leaching. Sure would appreciate your comments.

I'm not aware of any direct links with lupus and amalgam fillings but I would suggest that if there is an alternative you should have it. I too had all my fillings replaced years ago and would not have any put back unless there was no choice. X

Thank you Willow. My gut feeling too is to search for alternatives. Composite fillings work but, they don't last as long. However there is peace of mind and that's worth a lot.

I'm thinking the official answer to this is no. I seem to recall this question being asked a while ago and Prof D'Cruz saying that. I will check and put the answer here if it's not correct.

Thank you.

Just to confirm what I said Prof D'Cruz also said "There is no evidence that I am aware of that amalgam fillings are detrimental to SLE".

Thank you for the confirmation. I can go ahead now with an easy mind.
