🧡🙏 Our heartfelt thanks go to Nicola Dow for raising £1970 on her fundraising day on 20th January. Nicola organised a fantastic pub event with a pub quiz, Mr & Mrs, bingo and bonus ball raffle in addition to another raffle that raised a further £900. During the event Nicola gave out lots of information to raise awareness of skin cancer prevention and early detection, and the dedicated work of Skcin.

Here’s Nicola’s story and reason for wanting to raise awareness and vital funds to support our work.

“I’ve had a few moles removed over the past 20 years and all of them came back fine. Then in March 2023, I noticed a tiny freckle on my leg that was really itchy so I got it checked out. Turned out it was melanoma.

My mum and dad have taught me since I was a child how to keep an eye out for moles and any changes as I have lots.

When I was younger I did use sunbeds (about 9 years ago) before I went on my girls holidays and didn’t use the correct SPF when on holiday (just being young and wanting a good tan). But I’d say in the past 8/9 years I’ve really taken better care of my skin. I always wear a high factor SPF and I’ve never been back on sunbeds!

I’m passionate about getting the word out, because if it can happen to me (who is fully aware), it can happen to anyone.

I’m also a hairdresser, so your MASCED training programme within the beauty industry really called out to me as well. I think there should be more awareness out there too - and your charity pushes it so much!”
