Urine output

I find that my urine output overnight is much more than that during the day. In 2013 I had an accident causing spinal injury, paralysis below my chest, spasticity and double incontinence. That has resulted in me having a suprabubic catheter with leg bag (750ml) and night bag (2,000ml) attached to my leg bag overnight.

This means that my urine output can be easily measured. My carers empty my night bag and leg bag around 10am (typically about 2,000ml total), leg bag at 5pm (600ml) and leg bag at 9pm (300ml). So my urine output is around 2000/13 hours = 154ml per hour overnight and 900/11 hours = 82ml per hour during the day.

This is not a problem for me; it fits well with my equipment and carers' calls, but it would be if I were more dependent on absorbent products.

Do others find such a discrepancy between daytime and night time output?

If so, does it make night time issues such as bed wetting worse? Does anyone have any solutions?

Usually when the body produces more urine at night this is called polyuria. There is one drug (desmopressin) that appears to help with this, and is available depending on where you live and is available in different forms as well.

I do have tips for larger catheter bags and also extra absorbent diapers but am not sure if you needed the details on the diapers because you said your situation was under control.

Thank you for replying Sophie. The discrepncy between urine output by night and by day is not a problem for me because it does not come via the normal route but it might be an issue for those who do use the normal route. They would probably appreciate your information.
