Lynphodeama
Hi Uxp_d. I was diagnosed with lymphoedema in one leg 5 months after radical prostatectomy with lymph node dissection 3 years ago, and was referred to a lymphoedema clinic here in the UK.
I have the condition superbly well controlled with the use of a (sporty black) compression stocking. Was tricky to put on at first, but I very soon got used to it. I don’t like showing it in public but I really like the effectiveness.
My advice: get expert advice. Best of luck!
A slight swelling in the groin - which grew during the day and receded at night was what brought me to the doctor in the first place - when they measured a PSA of !000. My experience is that doctors who specialize in cancer know absolutely nothing about the lymph system. Eventualy I ended with my own diagnosis of Lymphodema in a lymph node in the groin. Basically the lymph system is a parallel system to the blood system and functions to drain the body of unwanted stuff - dead cells - dead cancer cells etc. We often get a first metastasis in a lymphnode because the body is trying to get rid of single cancer cells through the lymph system. If a lymph node is blocked (by a tumour) then you get lymphodema . Compression and massage is the only thing that helps - plus removal of the tumour that is causing the blockage - but it seems to me that surgeons are not good at maintaining the lymph flow - they just cut out the lymph nodes - which I suspect aggravates the lymphodema.
If the Lymphoedema is not bothersome should it still be addressed.Have had a collection point in my inner upper left thigh since diagnosis 2+ years ago.
It was ultra sounded (sorry made up word) at diagnosis to make sure it wasn't a blood clot.
My wife's best friend who passed from breast cancer had extreme pain from lymphoedema in her arm ( arm pit to hand involved). Wraps and opioids to try and overcome it.
My lower left calf swells most work days while sitting at the desk. It disappears after about 1 hr of walking or bike riding. It is surely related to RT but my RO said as long as I can resolve it this way I am OK and have no need of other therapies. I was asking about massage for Lymphodema at the time.
Interesting. Guys like you with RT get lymph system damage as do guys like me with damage from full metastases.
I vaguely remember looking at it on the internet a couple years ago and one thing stuck in my mind and it may well have been after going down a internet rabbit hole but if there is not damage to the nodes jumping on a trampoline can cause the lymph system to re-adjust from the effects.
Here is a internet quote:
Rebounding on a trampoline is a whole body exercise, and it may cause the lymphatic valves to open and close simultaneously which will cause increase lymph flow as much as 15x.
I was never 100% sure if it was RT only or if ADT played a role as well. I would probably hurt myself on a trampoline but I think the point is important. Once again the importance of whole body exercise is reinforced.
