My "1st" official scan....

So I went to GP to advise him of my pregnancy, he did the normal weight, blood pressure etc and we talked about pregnancy etc. now my memory is shot and I now don't know if I just wait for someone to ring me to book a midwife appointment and my dating scan or do I call to arrange? If so, who do I call, GP or nearest hospital? I know I sound like a right ejit, but I have seen others who are same no. of weeks, have their scans booked for mid April. I'm getting impatient and excited! :)

your dr should of sent off the relevant paperwork, and u should get a booking appointment with ur midwife around 8 weeks, I got my scan date at the same time, if u are near 8 weeks then id def give them a call they should have a community midwife team tel no at ur local hosp.. give the switchboard a call and they should put u thru, my dept is only open Mon to Fri 9-2 x

I'm 7w+2, so it's getting close to the mark! Hmmm ill give them a call today and see if they can point me in the right direction! Thx xx

I notified my G.P of my pregnancy around the 23rd/ 24th of March & my 1st official scan isn't until the 1st of may. I just thought because it's my 2nd pregnancy i'm less priority. Lol or the NHS System is under-pressure nowa-days.

How did they notify you of your first appointment as I've heard nothing? I've seen that some have received txt messages, letters...

I went to my GP well over a week a go! I'll get on the case Tuesday! ;)

The day after i notified my G.P of pregnancy he booked an appointment "there & then" to see the community midwife the day after. So she was able to go through all the details in the green book & book the scan appointment for me.

Because of the easter bank holiday it might be a tricky to get a G.P / midwife appointment, but you could always try the day after.

As I had a previous MC the EPU wanted to scan me at 8 weeks so I called my docs and spoke to midwife to explain, I saw her for my booking appt which lasted about 45 mins + and then she called EPU to ask them to contact me to arrange early scan. I think under normal circumstances where you will just need a 12wk dating scan you see midwife 8-10 weeks and then she's contact your hospital after you agree to having the scans and then a letter with come in post from the ultrasound department. Midwife will also give you your 'Maternity Notes' which will have all your antenatal info & results in. I like reading these and they are about the baby and I. You are 'supposed' to carry these with you at all times but its A4 & bulky so I don't at the moment. I Prob will if I get more health problems and when I get heavier.

It's all very exciting isn't it. That first scan may have your jaw on the floor as it makes the pregnancy that much more real and you think, OMG there's another little person growing inside me. I wish you all the best and hope you get to see your midwife and little one soon xx :)

Thanks Ladies this is very helpful.

Sorry to hear about your previous MC. I have already had two scans at EPU: 1 at 4 weeks, then 1 at 5.5 weeks (saw heartbeat) with bloods done too as i was bleeding early on. But I'm 7+ and I have no midwife yet! Think maybe they forgotten me!

Today I'm feeling normal, no sickness or sore breasts so I'm now worrying thinking the worst! I honestly cannot wait to see a proper baby on the screen though!

Duppy, you're going to have to be a bit patient my darling. 7 weeks is still very early to get a 'decent' picture on a scan so however quickly you get hold of a midwife, you'll still be better off waiting until 10-12 weeks. Relax over the weekend, then ring on Tuesday and just say "I can't remember if I'm waiting to see the midwife next or if I'll be getting a letter for a 12 week scan appointment next."

You usually don't see your GP at all, so they may count that as your 'booking in appointment' (that's where the midwife fills in a long series of forms and asks you lots of questions about your medical history - if you haven't filled these in yet, it would be normal to see the midwife between 8-10 weeks for your proper booking in appointment, to do that).

Try not to worry, especially if you have no more bleeding. Symptoms do come and go, that's normal.

Just take one day at a time. Before you know it you'll be 30+ weeks and looking forward to the birth xx

All very scary thinking about week + 30! Eek!

I'm chilled, and realise I won't get another scan till 10-12 weeks. Just would be nice to start ball rolling officially. Will investigate on Tuesday :)

Good ;)

It is scary thinking ahead - especially when you've had some bleeding. I have now passed the 30 week mark in my first pregnancy that is actually going 'normally'! Have had a miscarriage and a stillborn baby so I do understand the anxiety. I have learnt this time, that is nothing I can do except be as patient as I can. I promise the weeks have been flying by and they will for you too.

They'll tell you what to do on Tues and then you'll feel better that you have the next step/appointment to look forward to (coz each one can be a little mini milestone). x

My doctor did nothing - apparently she was new - so I called the GP service again, took the midwifery number, called them, informed them, met them and made future appointments all myself.

and I did that between week 7 and 8 so you are at the right time. My first appointment (without scan) was in week 10 and first scan was in week 13 (but timings for both the appointments were pre-booked at the same time, normally in my area the 12-14 week scan appointments are difficult to get on time, so its worth to make the appointment as much in advance as possible to make sure you get it within your first 12 and 14 weeks and not later) - that also helps you psychologically to settle into your pregnancy (once you know that the first trimester has passed and baby has made its due progress, its a big relief).

i am 17w, I went to my local doctor surgery which has a midwife who works at the hospital but works at the surgery one day a week so I saw her at week 9 for a booking apt then had my scan at hosp then I have another midwife apt which she said can be anytime between 15-18w and she said she will hear babys heartbeat. and then my next scan had already been booked when i had my 1st scan so yeh try and call ur local hosp midwife team and see what they say. To be honest the doctor i saw did nothing but as this is my first pregnancy i assumed u went to the gp but in the future i wont go unless i hav a prob and just see the midwife as the doctor told me what i already knew.

def chase it up cos u need to get booked in...no harm in double checking to make sure they haven't forgotten u! :-)

I got a call at almost 9/40 with booking apt at 10/40 and scan at 12/40. Depends on how stretched midwife survives are in your area. I've seen my midwife once but my obstetrician 4 times now (admitted once unscheduled as I didn't move quickly enough when a sick patient lashed out and punched me in the tummy - was lucky as my consultant was on call when I went to get checked over at the end of my shift!)

In my area i don't see te Dr to advice him of through pregnancy, you fill a form in for the midwife who contacts you and makes an appointment to see you around the 8-10th week mark who then does all the booking in information, paperwork to see low/high risk etc. Also the scan request form. Maybe phone you gp surgery to ask for advice in what to do now.

I had a pack from my GP to phone and book my booking appt, which I did, but I couldn't be fitted in until I'm 11+4! Because of this, they did my scan referral over the phone, took all the details and I received a letter last week for my dating scan (which is only 3days after my booking appt!) Apparently, they are a bit busy at the mo :P
