I will have my 20 week scan next Month and I'm so nervous I had a miscarriage few months ago so it's took all the confidence out of me.. I'm always so anxious 😣 can anyone tell me what they look for at 20 week scan? so far nothing seems wrong. Got low risk on all 3 syndromes but yet I still feel paranoid. Also when did your bumps get hard mine is not hard yet and I'm 15 weeks on Monday. This is my second pregnancy.
It’s very hard being pregnant after a loss & a struggle. It felt a long wait from having a 12 week scan to 20 weeks! Could you do a scan in between? They can be cheaper. I don’t know how easy / backlog it is to have a private scan with COVID19 & dads not being allowed to attend nhs scans. I had anxiety throughout the whole pregnancy with my daughter- scans would only offer reassurance for a day or so. Just remember it’s very unlikely to go wrong after 12 weeks. I understand the worry but think you’ll be fine xxx
I would have a scan next week that is no issue.. it's the 20 week scan I'm fearing 😔 what do they look for? I'm scared of something going wrong. Xxx
They have a look at everything in detail: growth markers (head circumference and diameters, abdominal circumference, leg length, ) and check they’re all somewhat consistent with each other and within the normal ranges. They look at all the baby’s organs for normal structure, size, and check they’re there and in the right place. They’ll look at the chambers of the heart. They’ll look at where the placenta is and whether the amount of amniotic fluid round the baby looks in normal range. It’s common because of position they might not be able to confirm all is normal just because they couldn’t get a good view of everything but rest assured this is really common.
All these things, as well as indicating any issues with the structures themselves, can indicate a condition with a baby because of the association of certain structural abnormalities and conditions either with you or baby (e.g. excessive fluid and large abdominal circumference of the baby might flag up possible early gestational diabetes in you, or heart problems can point at a chromosomal abnormality after a low risk result from the 12 week scan). I don’t want to scare you because all these things are extremely uncommon, it’s just to let you know what they look for and how things might get flagged up to prompt other tests.
You could well get a scan but I think this close to your actual scan it might put your mind at ease to ask the midwife to listen in- explain you are really worried about miscarriage and you havent felt movements yet and they might well quickly check for reassurance. I don’t know if covid is putting a spanner in the works with trying to see people at the moment though.
I understand how you feel. I was an anxious nervous wreck all the way through due to IVF and previous miscarriage. I had a 16 week scan with window to the womb as I felt 12-20 week scan was too far away. I didn’t really get a hard bump until much later in pregnancy. No one could really guess I was pregnant til about 25 weeks x

My bump didn't get harder till a lot later, probably not till my last trimester, at 15 weeks they've still got plenty of room in there, currently they're only the size of an apple so at 15 weeks some people won't even show yet.

If you ring your midwife in the meantime will they not listen in for you?
If you have an anterior placenta you may well not feel anything for another few weeks yet but I can’t say much for not feeling your uterus... you should be able to palpate it if you make your hand like a shelf and press with the side of your hand in and downwards. But how easy it is to feel to someone who isn’t used to palpating I’m not sure
