lactose intolerance diet trition might get involved
What prescription milk did you manage to get? Don’t get too worried about the dietician, they have more experience than the GP’s and will help you find the right milk for your little one and make sure he is gaining weight appropriately etc so it’s a good thing you’ve been referred to one x
they gave me simulac but I asked about the sma lactose free milk.... they told me to try that as well because he might agree more with the sma more ... so Im trying it now to see how he goes... I just want him to be ok.... when my gp said they get them involved I panicked xx
Lactose intolerance is really rare so perhaps your little boy is like my little girl and is actually struggling with the cows milk proteins themselves but the new milk will be able to tell you which one it is if you trial both 😊 He’s more likely to take the SMA as the Similac stinks and isn’t like regular milk at all! How old is your little one? If he’s young he may take to it ok, my little girl did at 7 weeks and now happily switches around the smelly prescription milks 😂 If he won’t take it a lot of people put a small amount of vanilla essence in and then wean them off that when they take their bottles. Let us know how you get on, I know it’s not easy working these things out when they are so young but once you do things will be a lot easier and it does get better.....promise! x
he is 14weeks today... he was doing so great with them colief drops wasn't struggling for a poop and his poop was normal colour now they have just stopped working..... ive been giving him sma lactose free milk since yesterday he aint had a poop yet.... im hoping he will have one soon and its the right colour its meant to be if not then I will put him on that similac and see how he goes.... its horrible not knowing what milk to give him. glad your lg has taken to it... did it take her long to take to it.
ive never heard of similac my first baby ( she now 12 ) but she couldnt have cow n gate she was sick constantly with that so I thought that might be what my lb got now but he aint been sick with sma... so I had so show my hv a poop nappy and because it was really bad dark green she said he lactose intolerance so did the doctor... I just want him sorted xxx
My little girl had very dark green nappies too 😢 but she also never slept well and we spent hours jiggling her to sleep and then sleeping with her on us as the allergy caused silent reflux issues too. She took to the milk really well in terms of flavour, I did a straight swap but by then she was really bad and we were all tired and cranky! We’re on milk no4 now as she was settled on one but it had a manufacturing shortage so we had to try others and things went pear shaped and she was unhappy again but 🤞🏻 It’s sorted. She’s now back to her happy noisy self 😂 I’m still on nappy duty now, it fluctuates between normal and green but that’s normal for the milk she is on, I wonder if I’ll ever see a normal poop! x
I dont think the sma lf worked as he aint been for a poop for nearly 3 days now.... so now to try the similac.... I see what you mean about smell its awful so far he is drinking it so I hope this works now xx
Glad to hear he is drinking it at least. Sorry he’s not been for a poo yet, perhaps if he hasn’t had one by Monday you might need to go back to the GP to see if they can give you something to help him go until he gets settled on a new milk 😢 Don’t get too disheartened if that milk doesn’t work, there are loads of others to try and some babies settle on some better than others it’s just a case of finding the right one x
well he didn't like the similac..... he had one bottle of it and now he is refusing to drink it.... so ive out him back on sma lf till I can get in my doctors.... he finally had a poop today and it was almost black.... he hadnt been for a poop for 5 days... I just dont understand he not crying or struggling to go...... I just want to know whats wrong with him so back to gp for him.... I just thought I would give you an update xx
Awww bless him. I’m not surprised he didn’t like the milk, it’s smelly stuff 🤢 Hopefully the GP will have some ideas of what to do next and thanks for the update x
Firstly as lovefood94 mentioned lactose intolerance is extremely rare in babies. Is constipation the only symptom hes having? I wouldn't say that is in keeping with cmpa either if it's the only symptom.
A dietician will normally get involved with babies with cmpa but to be honest if in hydrolysed formula and baby gaining weight there is not much the dietician can do until the start weaning.
I only got referred to a dietician through a paediatrician because our little girl was on reflux meds and because of the wait for the paediatrician appointment (3 month wait, seen at just over 5 months old) we’re now having to wean milk and soya free ourselves 😢 Don’t think our GP’s were up to the same standard of at least getting us dietician help which we will need ☹️ Mind you the GP who we saw at 6 weeks dismissed our milk issues (we had already put her on hypoallergenic SMA milk by that point, she had green poo, was snack feeding, had been better on breast milk, all of which we mentioned and he even wrote in her red book cows milk intolerance but didn’t help at all!) we went back at 7 weeks and got the hydrolysed milk and my daughter smiled for the first time. I’m just lucky we realised ourselves as even the midwife just told us we had a colicky baby!
That sounds bad. I think cmpa is a difficult one to diagnose sometimes sadly, it's something fairly new on the radar and the symptoms can be so vague and specific.
Heh just to be cheeky though; babies dont smile before 6weeks age, so not all necessarily down to milk.
That’s good to know on the smiling 😀 I just feel so bad we had such a rough start and I know she won’t remember but it was pretty traumatic for me and my husband, I think we wondered what on earth we had done 😂 I just need to count myself lucky I’m not one of the poor mothers that found out after months of GP visits etc and being fobbed off x
it was my hv and gp who told me he was lactose becausehe had really dark green poop.... he was in colief drops but they aint working no more and he wint take the similac milk so back to gp for him xx
My friends little boy had a bad dairy allergy, she was breastfeeding and cut all dairy from her diet and he started doing really well. Have you stopped breast feeding completely or could this be something you could try?
