Hi. My baby is 5 1/2 months so I’m starting to prepare for introducing solid foods soon and also thinking about trying him with a cup.
He’s breastfed and has never been hugely keen on a bottle (took me months to get him to take expressed milk from a bottle at all and even now he doesn’t take much from the bottle). I’ll also be continuing to breastfeed him so it’s just a case of introducing a cup so his Dad can feed him if I go out or for when my mum looks after him.
Has anyone got any recommendations for what type of cup to start with? Sippy cup or a more open one? Which brands/types have you had success using at this age?
Thanks! x

I’ve always been told to start with a free flow sippy cup. I just bought a cheap one from boots. We then bought one of those 360 ones about a month ago (she’s 8 months now) as the free flow was just going everywhere whilst she was practising but we’ve gone back to the free flow as she’s starting to drink more now and easier to see how much she’s drinking xx
Yeah it is. Just pours out when tipped upside down so a bit messy. My LG still doesn’t do it herself unless I give her the 360 one as that doesn’t go everywhere. She’s not a fan of water so for us it’s just getting used to it really. It’s annoying to have so many choices out there xx
Thanks. Just looked it up but couldn’t tell exactly which one it was. Is it one with a flip up spout? If so it’s probably the one I tried him with the other night. He just chewed the spout 😂 Will try again though and I think if he doesn’t get it I’ll try a more open one without a spout. He’s still only little so not going to rush him x
Aw yes it is the spout one that flips up and down my little girl has got on really well with it drinks lots of water now too.
Just keep trying and hopefully will take to it xx
I recommend the doidy cup, I got mine from amazon, it’s a great shape for babies to get the hang off. My ds took to it straight away. It’s great for breastfed babies x
He was coming up to 6 months so similar age to yours, the first time he used it he licked the water out like a dog lol but second time he picked it up and started sipping I was really surprised x
You can get those 360degree cups that release water all the way around so liquid is dispensed without pouring all out. To be honest we went straight for a normal cup with our little one. At first he wasn't sure, but 2 months on and he's drinking away! I tend to hold it as otherwise it'd end up all over his face.
Thanks. I actually got one of those 360 ones as well but haven’t tried it yet so that might be an option. I know babies are messy but the thought of going to the trouble of expressing milk and then having it go all over is actually gonna be quite hard I think!
Didn't realise you meant for milk. I think you can carry on with a bottle until 12 months. I just give baby water in a cup and breastfeed. Sorry misunderstanding on my part - precious milk indeed!!
No worries. Yeah you can but he’s never been great with a bottle and I want him to be able to have milk from people other than me at times so he can stay with his Dad and grandparents without me worrying about him being hungry! x
He will now have the Nuk ones (took me months!) but does still refuse and it seems to take him ages to drink a fairly small amount. I think he’d end up hungry if I left him for more than a few hours hence why just looking at other options! x
Bless. They can be so picky can't they. Good luck with your search. Nuk have lots of different cups and they're always good quality. It's my go to brand. Plus they have some fab teething toys too.
This is a really helpful thread, thanks for starting it! My 4 month old daughter is not a fan of the bottle either and I’m beginning to wonder how she will take water when we start weaning! It would also be good for my husband to be able to give her some of my expressed milk from a cup. Will have a look at some of these cup recommendations. Thank you! Xx
