Hi,
I had a midwife appointment today and measured my bump. I’m 34+2 weeks and my bump measures 35cm. They plotted me on the graph and I’m above the 95th percentile so they are sending me for a growth scan. Am I going to have a whopper of a baby????
Hi,
I had a midwife appointment today and measured my bump. I’m 34+2 weeks and my bump measures 35cm. They plotted me on the graph and I’m above the 95th percentile so they are sending me for a growth scan. Am I going to have a whopper of a baby????
From my experience not necessarily (but possibly). I measured a bit bigger throughout (although only gained about a stone) and my dates were right as it was IVF pregnancy.
Due to the IVF I had extra growth scans at 30 and 36 weeks and baby was around 95th centile on all the scans too. I was induced and he was born on his due date at 8lb5oz so although I’m glad he didn’t stay in for much longer, he wasn’t exactly huge compared with what I was expecting from the measurements and scans!
Thank you for your reply! I haven’t gained that much weight but it really is all just on my belly! I have heard so much about measurements and scans not being that reliable.
Don't worry about it. They told me my baby was measuring large (9-10lbs) and now he's levelled out at my 32 week appointment (31+3). The midwife I had said they are not always accurate. It is just a guide. They will tell you if you need to have a growth scan. Normally at the time of measurement.
She also said babies have growth spurts so it's okay! X
When I used to get measured they said the bump should measure the same as the week your on so 34 weeks bump should be 34cm but 2cm either way was fine. I was always measuring fine and had a 10lb baby so I don’t think you can really go by those measurements anyway xx
Thank you. Yeah I’ve always measured within the 2cm either way too! Xx
I was measured last week and bump was measuring a week ahead which put baby on 90th percentile however had a growth scan yesterday which his estimated weight from is only around 50th percentile, fundal height's are not accurate at all. Babys current estimated weight at 36 + 3 is 6 lb 5 oz so not huge at all.
I was huge with my first and he was only 6lb 7 oz i was much smaller with my second and he weighed 7 lb 13 oz so bump size really doesnt always mean anything.
I don’t know how they can get it so wrong!!
Quite easily as it's all based on the measurements for stomach size and leg length and averages. It's impossible for any really 100 percent accurate way to work it out. One or twk millimetres wrong on a measurement can put a baby weight out drastically. Or like my kids they could just be really long. Even my eldest was super long just didn't weight a lot.
Hi
I had reduced movements at 36 weeks a couple of times so they sent me for a scan to see if all was ok.
She was perfect but she was measuring in thr 97% percentile and it was at that point that they booked me in for a c section.
The day before i had her she was still measuring big but when I had her she was only 8lb 8oz.
Thats not to say yours wont be a big baby...jusy saying they can be wrong x
The fundal heights are super prone to user variation so try not to worry. Enjoy that you are getting an extra scan! I’ll be planning to get a private scan when I am around 32-34 weeks anyway as it gives a better idea of growth than fundal height. Xx
Hello, this happened to me and I was monitored due to GDM anyway but my son was 6lb11oz!! Tiny! Good luck and enjoy the extra scan x
At 36 weeks my son was measuring 12lb 1oz and when he came via c-section at 38+6 he was only 9lbs 2oz which is still on the bigger side but no where near what they estimated. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have a big baby but I wouldn’t rule it out either. Xx
If you are 34 weeks and measuring 35 that’s pretty normal - how is that 95th centile?!
Usually it’s same amount of weeks of cm - and a couple below or above is fine.
The only thing I can assume is that you have a personalised chart and you are a very petite person? X
How tall are you? That’s the only thing I can conclude because usually 50th centile would be 34 cm so 35cm wouldn’t be much more! Not all areas use personalised charts yet but if you were using a standard one then 35cm would almost be bang on so it’s all a bit odd! X
In 5’4” I have a personalised chart and that is what’s showing me being “big”. I have only put on weight on my stomach though so I’m not sure if that has something to do with it
That’s funny then it’s not like you’re under 5 foot or something! I’m also 5’4’’ and all my weight is on my stomach too so will be interesting to see what my chart will say! I don’t know if it’s also based on bmi or weight of previous babies etc I’m not sure.
This website is quite interesting - it suggests that what has happened to you is very common! Scroll down to the last couple of paragraphs
On my last visit bump measured huge - so prepared myself mentally to push out 10lbs baby - and guess what? My boy was only 6lb1oz at 39+4
Try not to worry!x
Woth our son, he always measured a week ahead. If anything I wouldn't go off bump measurements. According to that, they told.me he would be a normal size. We went off scan pictures. He was always measuring bigger.
We had extra scans for health reasons. I got induced at 38 weeks. Our boy was born at 38+3 weighing 8lb 13oz. We were told if we had gone full term or over he would of been 10lb+.
It's hard to tell as the measurements have been off with my friends babies. 2 days before he was born, we had a scan which measured him at 8lb 10oz so ours wasn't far off. It's a waiting game until baby is here! Probably won't be able yo tell until near the end as baby still has some growing to do xx
