Hi everyone, I had my lo waight today and she weighs 6.33 kg she is 5 months old today

HV said she’s fine but I’m concerned 😟 as I know she eats little I like to introduce her to solid foods from now on. HV said to wait until 6 months but everyone else says to start.

I’m confused 😐 🤷‍♀️

Hi.

It really depends on the birth weight. If she is staying on or around the centile she was on at 2weeks of age, then everything should be fine. Why do you want to start her on solids? Is she interested in foods when you are eating ? Do you think she is not getting enough nutrients from breastmilk/ formula? Is she constantly hungry? Or is it just because other people are telling you? My health visitor advised us follow guidelines and to start weaning at 6 months but if we feel she is ready we can start as early as 4months. She suggested very plain foods like boiled carrots/ pears...

Hi

I wanna start cos she doesn’t like milk she isn’t eating to much and I see signs that she is ready, like she grabs food from my hands, she can set for a few seconds and I feel she will be much better if I give her some food. I know in the beginning they don’t eat much food but at least it will cover the milk she refuses and be more full.

She should be able to sit for more than few sec to be able to eat, you don't want to risk her choking on the food she eats. Also she won't be more satisfied because at the begining most of the food will end up all over her face and not much will be swallowed. You have to make sure she is ready to eat solids. If she is not having enough with just breast milk why don't you try to give her some formula?

I’m giving her some formula but I’m ending throwing most of it away as she takes just a little. She’s on Brest milk most of the time. I give formula only when we go out or on the evening.

Can I ask how do you prepare baby’s food? And what equipments are u using

For example lets say you want to give your baby a carrot. You peel it, put in a saucepan, pour water enough to cover it and boil it. You can give it to your baby when it is soft boiled and cooled. Let her enjoy new texture, let her use her hand and feed herself. It will be messy, she won't actually swallow a lot but she will learn new skill.

You can do that with any veg and some fruits.

And what about steaming?

in reply toAna_ana

You can steam it as well... as long as you don't fry it in oli/butter it's fine, your baby should explore new tastes and frying is just too fatty for their stomach

If she's not dropping centiles dramatically then there's no real reason to be worried. My friends little girl is dinky too & she's perfectly healthy at almost 18months old.

As for weaning, what makes you keen to start? Is she showing the signs? Can she sit unaided etc? Don't feel pressured either by others to start just because the advice used to be different. I had the same but waited & was very glad I did x

As above depends on centile not just weight. Also starting solids doesn't mean they gain weight as they eat very small amounts to start off ... the main source of calories till a year is milk. The official advise is to wait till 6months... my is turning 6months next week so prepping to start feeding her she's very excited when she's us eating, and can sit in a high chair (with straps) but will be small amounts to taste rather than get full

I have to be honest, food really is not the magic answer that people claim it to be. Is she formula or breast fed? It takes quite a while for them to eat enough to be satisfied and a lot of popular weaning foods have a lot less calories than milk, so they can end up filling their stomachs with food that actually doesnt give them as much nutrition. Remember when people say weaning the correct term is actually introducing solid foods as you should not be reducing the amount of milk for several months yet

They used to wean at 4 months when i was a baby. Now they say the digestive system isn't ready until 6 months and reduces risk of allergies. My HV said wait til 6 months.
