We started at 24 weeks. The official advice is to wait until 6 months but obviously it's your personal choice. Their digestive systems are still very immature at 4 months when some people start weaning so you have to be careful if you choose to wean early. Have a look for local weaning sessions at your children's centre or health centre. I went to one and it taught me everything I needed to know. Basically your baby has to be able to sit up straight unaided and also have good hand / mouth coordination (pick up a toy and put it in their mouth without your help) before you should consider weaning. When you do start, it will just be little tastes so your baby gets to try different flavours & textures. Maybe just a few spoonfuls of baby rice or porridge then move on to home made puréed fruit and veg. If you start weaning at 6 months u can start off on finger food where the baby picks things up and eats it themselves. Some babies prefer this rather than spoon feeding. We started slowly on purée x

I started weaning at 8.5 months he's my number three and after forcing upon my other two at 4 months old I'm so glad I stuck to my guns and followed baby's lead this time. He eats better then the other too. Is less messy too.

They say once the push back relex of the tongue has gone baby will take from a spoon and not spit it out at this point they are ready. Every baby is different. We tried baby rice at 6 months and his reflex was still there so didn't bother. Only when he started waking more at 7.5 to 8 months old I thought its best to start him on BLW. But as he has no teeth yet (only 1 in last two weeks) found it hard so we switched to spoon feeding he loves it.

Oh okay thanks for the advice! :)

NCT do a weaning course which I found really useful and made me feel confident about what I was doing. I did baby led weaning and it worked well for me. babyledweaning.com You can borrow Gill Rapley's book from children's centres or your local library.
