If im honest Ive never heard of the "sweep" working for anyone yet. Im starting to think why the idea was ever thought up & by whom?

I did have one a few years ago in 2008 when my son decided to be stubborn for another 2 wks after his due date & it seemed to be totally useless for me

He did however decide to "spontaneously" start the labour process about 12 days after the "sweep" so he proberly thought ( Im not having that again)

i haven't yet but if this little man doesn't appear within 2 weeks then i will be offered one, again of the people i know to have had one i don't know anyone that it has actually worked for, i am in the mindset that they will come when they r ready. how far along are u? are u going to be having a sweep soon? x

I've been swept more times than a bloody chimney! I'm half expecting Dick Van Dyke and his pals to come out singing "Step In Time"! I've had four. The first one did encourage my show to happen with more force. Then the next one did diddly squat (was still 1cm dilated and firm cervix). Third one I had mild improvement but not enough for her to record! Then the fourth two days later (which I had on Thursday) showed that I was now 2.5cm dilated and the cervix was softening....so the one before had encouraged more dilation in that 2 days! Hoping that last one I had is doing it's thing as we speak.....it was the first one she could do properly as such as I was more dilated and I could feel her brushing over the baby's head this time! So we shall see if I actually get to have the baby before being induced! x

I can echo Fattyboom's sentiments! Your post made me laugh out loud, thank you! I had about three trying to get my son to appear, I have since been told that as he was big and very low down that is why the sweeps were unsuccessful! It is it a pleasant experience, but it does depend on the midwife I found. Good luck and I hope it works for you! X

LOL!!

Oh dear "fattyboom" I couldn't help but literally laugh-out-loud at your response. Just like Ceri said Ive come to the conclusion of thinking these babies will come out as & when they please.

Have you being offered an induction date yet or are they willing to give you more time?

in reply to

Lol. I'm back with the midwife on Thursday....so if no baby by then she will book me in for an induction the following Tuesday or so (about 12 days after my due date she said). She goes on holiday next Sat and she really wants me to have the baby before she goes now lol x

lol thts hilarious fattyboom, tht wud be amazing if dick van dyke appeared, thts my fave film....

in reply to

Him and that ridiculous 'cockney' accent....that would freak me out a bit! Lol. I love that film too :-)

in reply to

Never mind freak out I think I would pass out!

yeah I agree I think they will come when they are ready

but im getting one on fri the 6th, 2 days before my due date so im as well as to get it to see if it does bring on labour :)

ive looked on line & some people said it worked for them then others said it done nothin for them, same with people ive spoke to works for some then not for others, I will get it done & see what happens. midwife said to me I will get it done in mornin then hopefully by night I will start to get contractions,

in reply tokimmy01

well you never know!

Im sure there's always a Lil' possibility of it working for some women (out there)

Good luck! :)

I was supposed to have one last Wed on the advice of the consultant @ 38 wks however when I saw the MW she would not do it on the premise that she does not believe in doing them before EDD. I am booked to have one next Wed @ 39 weeks which she said she will do as I have induction booked on the following wed (My EDD).

I have had friends that it has worked for and others not so maybe it is a 'timing' thing.

Message FattyBoom.....she has more sweeps then you can shake a stick at X

in reply tocheekymonkey3791

Oink! no, its dosen't mean you're gonna turn into a fat piggie

Ive had days like this already & Ive just passed the 30wk mark. Felt a bit more on the tired side today though so Ive just got up from a 3hr nap.

is your date the 7th, it so exciting ie,

it can happen any time now, every day I think is today going to be the day :)

yes my date is the 7th, its my first so don't know what to expect but am bored of being pregnant now lol so hopefully will happen soon. I am impatient and thts with everything so this will drive me loopy if I am too late. i am excited, as its my first not really nervous bout labour right now as i am in the mind set tht i cant be scared of something tht i have never experienced. wow 3, do u know if this one is a girl or boy? x

kimmy01 profile image
kimmy01

just 1 week to go,well hopefully :)

yeah am the same at this stage just get so fed up, but not long now, im having a boy, ive got a girl & a boy already so im chuffed,

r you having a boy to ?

I had high blood pressure aswell and a few times ive had palpatations, had to go to hospital my heart rate was skyhigh,

every labour is different but im just so nervous, but to be honest my last two labours were very very sore but once babys born its the best thing ever & worth every moment of pain, don't see it that way while getting the pain tho lol x

in reply tokimmy01

Hi kimmy01

I just noticed your reply on this topic & i just wanted to ask you, as your nearly due to have your 3rd child was giving birth to your 2nd child firstly easier & quicker.

As you mentioned i know every birth story is different but im starting to get very worried as im getting closer to giving birth to my 2nd child ( early november) :-)

And me! You've really cheered me up! Got that song in my head now though....

in reply toscoffcat

Lol! I have done all day now....with only myself to blame! I may watch the film tomorrow and have a singalong lol

yeh am having a boy, ah so u have the best of both worlds already with one of each. yeh my bp has been high wen I see the midwife then wen I go to hosp its fine. yeh I will probs b in a right state when the time comes but hey lol. x

kimmy01

abenaa :)

I,ll be honest with you with my 1st I went to hospital at 6am &had daughter at 12:45 then with 2nd I was in & out hospital for 2 days with my son, so I say my 2nd was the longest but the pushing stage was a lot quicker &easier, but every labour is different,

im hoping just to arrive at hospital and have baby soon im hoping, im going to hang of and try &cope in house for as long as possible, they say if you concentrate on your breathing it will all go a lot easier :) x

in reply tokimmy01

Ive got the same mentallity of I'll try to stay at home a bit longer once labour starts but for some reason ive got a feeling im gonna start "freakin out" espcially if my waters break or something.

:-)

Ive done a few ante-natal yoga classes with this pregnancy though so i should be able to control my breathing alot better with this baby.

Thanks for the reply :-)

aw we boy, its we boys booming out everywhere at the moment :)

yeah got 1 of each already so im chuffed with aving another boy,

have you picked a name yet, its harder to choose for boys a think x

we have a possibility of a few but think r just going to wait and see, yeh I think it is harder as I think with girls there r so many 'pretty' names out there but with a boy u want a solid name and it is a lot harder. have u got a name? x

Hi there, the simple reason it sometimes works and other times it doesn't is because some women are physically more ready than others to have their babies. I had a sweep with no 2 and sure enough 13 hours later he was born, however I was 7 days over dates and my cervix was soft so I was near to birthing anyway. Frequently sweeps are used to instigate labour before baby is ready to be born so it doesn't work and just leaves mum to be feeling uncomfortable (hands up your lady parts isn't nice, lets face it) and miserable that nothing has happened.

In real terms its about time people understood that each pregnancy is different just like each person is different and babies have their own timing. 40 weeks gestation is not written in stone but instead probably written by a man and not everywoman conforms to this. Trying to make babies arrive before they are ready (without medical evidence to justify the need) just makes the process of labour and birth more stressful for both mother and child. The induction resulting in intervention statistics will show you more and you can find this info on the net. I would suggest you look at Katherine Graves book on hypnobirthing for a more detailed explanation but there are other sources which challenge the need for this intervention too. I hope this helps :)

we just never know when its going to start, but im hoping with being my 3rd itl be easier & quicker, am so hoping lol :)

my waters didn't break there selfs so I keep thinking this time they will, when im out & about, however labour goes for us all at the end of it it will be worth it as we<l have our lttle bundle of joy :) x
