Positive Wellbeing During Self-Isolation
What is your favorite pie flavor and why? Multiple choice.
Rhubarb it reminds of back in the day dipping a stick into the sugar bowl. No way would I even consider letting my kids do that. We all must have been on a sugar rush thinking back lol
We did that when young too but kids today would turn their nose up at thought of chewing on a freshly picked rhubarb dipped in sugar. We were all hyper most of the time!
Love cherry pie with vanilla ice cream 😋
That sounds really good to me, Clive. Is it on the side or mixed on top/bottom?
Top 😋
That's wonderful! Thank you!
What's your favourite Leah x
My favorites are: Apple, Cherry, Pumpkin, Blueberry, Key Lime, Peach.
I voted for cherry but also blackberry and apple. Scrumptious but has to have GF pastry.
Pumpkin. Always associated with the winter holidays.❤️🏄♀️
Apple or Blackcurrant pie with vanilla ice cream. Makes me long of summer
Apple cinnamon pie because my tastebuds come to life. Mmmm mmm good
My favourites are gooseberry and rhubarb; nice clean refreshing flavours to perk up the taste buds!!😋
No 1: Beefsteak Pie - festive favourite
No2: Cheese & Bacon Potato Pie - everyday substantial meal.
Are they like Shepard's Pie?
Not quite.
Beefsteak Pie is a rich beef stew/casserole with gravy and a top of flaky or puff pastry glazed and cooked to golden brown. Traditionally served with mashed potato and a root veg - but I prefer it with roast onions and roasted potatoes and extra gravy. (Also the traditional Scottish New Year's day lunch)
Cheese & Bacon Pie is made with mashed potato with chopped sauted bacon and grated cheese seasoned and mixed, topped with grated cheese and browned in oven or under grill. Even better with some sauted, chopped onion mixed in or a layer of sliced tomatoes included for a savoury one dish meal.
Lemon meringue
Activity2004Hermes123 Peach pie and custard ! But the pastry has to be just right not hard and crusty around the rim, firm but flaky and custard thick. Um! making my mouth water already. Hermes.
Really? We’re voting on pie? No pie is good pie for those of us with cancer. Now fresh fruit is another thing...
Because its yummy 😂
Which one is your favorite?😀👍🌈
Apple
Sounds good! Do you have any ice cream with it?😀👍🌈
Custard
Steak and Kidney! Ahh! brought up on em!🤗🤗🤗👍👍
I love to bake ,as a child my sisters and myself made Pies , for the Senior Ladies at our Church ,it was part of our Ministry until we were 16 yrs of age ,It was such a joy to see the smiles on their faces .This Post is very sentimental .I still bake for Seniors in my neighborhood. I was trained as a child and did not depart from it .THANK YOU MOM and GRANDMA ! God Bless You for all the good you taught me !
I’d just like to know why we are repeatedly asked to do this? It isn’t helpful or supportive.
The polls are for fun and anyone who wants to participate on them, then they can always post a comment.😀👍🌈
It gets my mind off MS & gives me something else to think about for a while, so I think it's useful & supportive for me anyway. It is after all just an opinion & everybody has one!
If the polls upset you then don't take part in them.
Chicken & leek; cheese, bacon & potato pie sounds brill, as does gooseberry & rhubarb. Love lemon meringue. Otherwise, practically any & all! All-time favourite: my father's apple tart (pie), have never met pastry like his! And has to be with custard!
They sound really good. When do you have them? For holidays? Weekly?😀👍🌈
Well, I haven't had sweet things since New Year, being of that annoying figure-type which is deep in the pelvis - good for childbearing, but shows weight gain! Except for an obligatory piece of M&S chocolate cake brought as a gift by a friend - on the solid decoration of which I dislodged a dental splint which is likely to cost up to £100 to repair (I daren't tell her, & fortunately with the lockdown she won't see) ! But will have a treat at Easter, when entertaining a dear v elderly friend.
I rarely eat pastry now but loved Mum's apple pie or rhubarb crumble both with thick custard in my teens.
Apple pie but it must have cloves in it for added flavour and come with custard or cream.
Love coconut cream & banana cream pies. Apple pie, warm with home-made whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. 🥧 Now I wonder if I can talk the husband into stopping at the pie shop this weekend 🤔
I know you meant a sweet pie, but I can’t resist a good steak and kidney pie, shortcrust pastry too.
Savoury - Steak and Kidney / Fruit - Apple and blackberry. Although Chicken, Ham and Leek comes a close second!
Sweet cherry pie, only particular times of the year when our cherry tree came forth with cherries, always very abundant when in season!👍
This is good to know. How many cherries do you get each season for the pies? 😀👍🌈
We had about three cherry trees [cooking cherries] plus a few from the shop down the road, or local market, her pastry for it, was goood! That was about 25 years ago, I have two cherry trees in my own garden, cooking and eating, but nearly in full blossom! Sisters are hopeful this year? [no way!]🍒🍒👍
Rhubarb and Goosbury (separately) are both delicious, but they both need a crumble topping rather than rolled pastry.
This is good to know. How much crumble do you use? 😀👍🌈
A little or a lot - depending on whether you are counting the calories! Reducing the amount of sugar you add to both the fruit and crumble can help if you are into healthy eating as does replacing some of the flour with flaked oats, but at the end of the day, you need a reasonable amount of crumble - otherwise, you may as well just eat the stewed fruit.
gooseberry reminds me of childhood@
cherry pie is the only pie!!!
but wait - am i to understand that there are other flavors of pie????
pumkin??? BLECHK!!!!!! that should never be a pie!!! pumkins are for chucking only !! (preferably from a trebuchet)
blueberry and other berries would probably make a good pie.... but if i'm going to invest in a pie - only reason not to do cherry would be if cherries were unavailable!!!
PS:
marachino cherries are NOT cherries!!!! whoever invented them should be tarred and feathered!!!!
Warm with whipped cream.
Anyone of the pies would be my choice over cake.
My absolute favourite is a banoffe pie, my daughter makes one & she does a meringue base, it’s delicious, so light & scrumptious 😋
What does a banoffe pie taste like? I never got a chance to try it. 😀👍🌈
It’s lovely & light, obviously tastes of banana & has bananas in it, it’s consistency is similar to a cheesecake but smoother, there’s also a bit of caramel too, melts in the mouth, topped with cream, if u get the chance try it, yummy 😋
This sounds good and I like cheesecake. Can the bananas be substituted for other fruits if the person can't have them?
I’m sorry I really don’t know, I’ve never made it, when I asked my daughter she didn’t know either, apparently you can get the filling in tins, it’s like a caramel type thing that comes ready made in a tin similar to the condensed milk tins, originally it was made with the condensed milk, but there’s one already to use now, sorry I’m no help to you, but I would imagine you could change it for something else 😊
Because my Mom made such good pies in numerous flavours but I did like her chocolate pie with whip cream on top!
Apple pie was the first food my family gave me after a 1 month stay in hospital. I was in hospital after an unprovoked act of violence towards me. That is a story for another day.
Sorry to hear that about you being in the hospital.
Did you have anything with the apple pie? 😀👍🌈
Yes, I could have done with a nice stout, but all they let me drink was milk!
Gooseberry pie with crumble topping.
I like PIE! I never heard of bean pie but all that you had listed plus lots more kinds too.
That’s fantastic to hear that! Do you have any favorite type of pie during the holidays or special occasions? 😀👍🌈
Pumpkin, apple, mixed berry you name it I'll try it chocolate pie with whipped cream on top. I heard about onion pie I am gonna find 1 & try it as I have a friend who loves onions & she said she wished there was an onion pie!
Haven't had them in a couple years! Due to covid for one year I'm in Washington state and momma is in California 😓 and year before she was I'll. But we got our first vaccination today so it's gonna be soon!
Which COVID vaccine are you getting today? I had both Maderna vaccines recently and doing okay from them. Congratulations on getting yours for today!
I had the Oxford jab on Monday and feel OK now.
You’re first dose, or second? It’s great to hear that you’re feeling better now.😀👍🌈
My first one and they said they will write to me again with an appointment for the second one in 3 months time.
I used to add brown sugar, lemon peel, sultanas and cloves to apple pies. My favourite used to be a cherry pie made with tinned cherry pie filling.🙂 🍒🍋🍏
This sounds really good! Some of the cherry pie filling we have is also from a can, but we use it for toppings for other foods, too. My mom was using the filling for vanilla yogurt and she was mixing the filling into the vanilla yogurt so it would be either a parfait or a 'sundae'.
What is
For apple pie I mix ground cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg with soft brown sugar, all sprinkled over the apple. What is key lime?
Happy eating!
I love blueberry, and even more so-windberry, my mother in law used to buy these from local children who would climb the hills in South Wales to pick them they were tiny so took time. Served in a pie with cream they were amazing. Happy memories!
I use a range of fish - cod or haddock, plain or smoked fish, with prawns and salmon.
Pecan pie is just so delicious with some whipped cream.
Always loved apple pie, especially my Mums.
Mine's cauliflower cheese pie with a lovely shortcrust pastry, Leah. Might sound a bit odd, but it really works for me!
This sounds really delicious, Sue! Do you have any pictures of the pie?
I don't Leah, but I'll take one next time I make it. 👍
Sounds good! Can't wait to see the picture when it's ready to be posted.
I like peacan the best then coconut cream and chocolate cream. I also love blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream on top. It makes me think of my grandmother. I have never heard of a bean pie. For savory pies I like quiche.
Those sound really wonderful, cljones . I've never had a bean pie, either, but they sound interesting to try.
When do you have pecan pie? For holidays or holidays and other times of the year?
I got the Mederna vaccine too! Get second dose April 20th!
Best of luck with your second dose!
No thry are tiny and have to be looked for I have never seen them on sale but others who live in South Wales may know more than me. Pies were made for us as a very special treat on special occasions,
Choice between Frangipane and Apricot, or as meat pies in the UK Steak and Kidney.
My moms lemon meringue pie 😍
Well it's hard these days to find gooseberries so sadly have not had gooseberry pie in a long while!
I feel good, arm is little sore that's all.
