Positive Wellbeing During Self-Isolation
What is your favorite instrument to play/listen to and why? Multiple choice.
Cello, the instrument that most closely resembles the human voice. I am prejudiced because I sang alto!
That's great! When I had been in school, I sang in the school chorus and was a soprano singer.
Me too...first soprano A cappella.
I adore a cappella, & always respond particularly to the low notes. So I agree with you about beloved alto voice, and the cello.... Though, together with many other instruments, I also love the clarinet, and piano. Not forgetting the fiddle! Folk, bluegrass, country... All sorts of music.
I sang alto and did a lot of choral work at school and the local choirs years ago. I know Handel's Messiah off by heart I've sung it so many times 😁🐰
I was lucky to sing in a variety of choirs so classical, madrigals, modern music and gospel. My favourite oratorio of all time is Elijah - Mendelssohn writes tunes for altos, such a luxury!
Viola, as it has a gorgeous, woody sound not found in the violin. I melt when I hear Vaughan Williams' Flos Campi.
The clarinet because I played it at school. It was loaned through the council so had to be given back. My parents couldn't afford to buy me one. I would love to play one again. Flute because my friend was exceptionally good at it . I do like the trumpet because I love hearing brass bands playing What's your favourite?
Lots of love and hugs Lynne xxxx ❤️🤗💜🤗
I have 3 favorites along with singing. They are: guitar, piano and violin. I know a Violinist who did songs for Seniors and he'd play for them once a month. He also performs with the BSO. The piano was a friend who did a few songs here and there years ago. The guitar was when my brother was in his own band.
This is quite a difficult question for me because it depends on what mood I am in. Sometimes I prefer the piano, others violin. Edward Elgar was introduced to me back in the 1980's by my music teacher at Mangotsfield Secondary School. My Dad and I used to listen to classical music and I still do, amongst others today. Trumpet and trombone are also a favourite. .
That's fantastic! It's nice to have a lot of different choices of music/instruments to enjoy.
I also really like the banjo, each instrument on your list has a special piece of music that really makes that instrument shine. I once heard the "Flight of the bumble bee" played on violin, not sure I will ever forget that performance.
That sounds really lovely! You're very lucky to be able to listen to that on a violin. I never had the chance to do that, yet. If COVID is better/lessens, then I may have a chance to listen to Flight of the Bumblebee on the violin, too, but we'll have to wait and see. Would be nice to listen to it that way.
I voted for piano and violin. Piano because we had one growing up and violin because it is so relaxing to listen to. 🎹🎻
What are your favorite songs on both piano and violin?
King of the road on the piano..my aunt use to play that very well. For violin, anything is relaxing to me. Soothing. ☺
That's great to hear. How long had your Aunt played piano?
I actually have no idea, she was not a professional pianist or anything..she just enjoyed playing. ☺
That's okay. The important thing is, she enjoyed when she played. It's like I have a few hobbies and I enjoy them, but I sometimes have to take a break from them depending how I feel during the day/week. If I don't feel okay, then I don't do a few of them that day/week.
We are definitely alike in that manner. I moved into a new place and i dislike change so i have been a bit down and struggling to find much joy in anything.
Sleep is fun for me lately lol. 🌹
Love all of them, in pop groups and in orchestras, I did see flautist James Galway and enjoyed his concert very much. So during lock down just listen to a lot.
What was his last concert you had attended? What songs did he do?
I play piano every day and twice a week for patients in hospital. Old songs, some jazz, some blues, hymns and gospel. There is such a range and depth of sound and I love tweaking harmonies and improvising on chord progressions.
What Jazz songs do you perform for the patients and residents?
I've so many! I'm currently working on "My Ship" and "A Garden in the Rain" arranging my own interpretations. I like a mix of ballads, up tempo and blues. If u have a few favourites, please name them. If it's possible I'll record them and out a snippet in a post.
Just love the sounds they make
That's great to hear! Do you have a favorite song for each one that's used?
Its usually what i hear in movies super man / star wars the themes , background music
That's great to know.
I love to hear a good guitar player. I always wanted to learn but never did. I also like the banjo.
Do you listen to songs written by John Denver? He used to play guitar with his songs he had done. One of my favorite singers since I was 6 years old.
I used to like John Denver’s music many years ago.
Yes I would listen to him all the time.
My favorite song is Sunshine on my Shoulders.😀👍🌈🎶🌞
Mine is Rocky mountain high.
learned to play as a child ,my sisters played too ,we had a Gospel Singing Group ,my Father played the guitar ,he was one of our Church Musicians ,we sang for Dr ,Martin Luther King ,at Bethel Baptist Church ,in B'ham .ALA . .I was 11yrs old .
That's great to hear. It's nice to be able to start a family band/group for singing/playing instruments. My brother was in a band and then he created a family band a few years ago. He does the guitar and the children sing/play instruments and his wife does backup singer.
Hi Leah
Another good poll, I've chosen Clarinet and Guitar. I love listening to both being played, I find them so relaxing.👍🌈😊
Thank you for saying that, Alicia. Much appreciated.
What songs do you listen to on both?
You're welcome Leah.
I just like listing to many songs being played on either instrument and I think that the Shadows were definitely the best with the guitars.🌈😊👍
Which songs did they do?
I hope this link works Leah
It’s not working.😕
Seems like links in replies, especially on polls may not work 🤔
Strange, it's just worked for me.
I also play the Irish Whistle and Bodhran😊
Oh yes..!
Yes, and guitar. Half way to recreating my own Bothy Band haha. Loving singing folk songs and that’s what I’ve missed most during lockdown singing with others. Not the same doing it online😔
Which folks songs do you sing?
Mostly traditional Irish but some trad English and more modern American. Anything really. Just like singing and often get together with musician friends or did pre-lockdown. Now it’s just me and my guitar😅Do you sing?
You're obviously a Folkie, congratulations! I never got to the clubs because I don't drive, but I became immersed in the festivals for a number of years. The first time I heard a cappella, at close quarters by the 1st class Cockersdale, the hairs actually did stand up on the back of my neck. I was a greenhorn then, but subsequently learned a lot. Not least that most of us have a voice however limited the range, which emerges during the great & mesmeric group a cappella 'sings', when it is impossible not to sing! I adored all sorts of music, but the human voice as an instrument in its' own right, is perhaps the favourite. Eg. Mouth music.
I'm musically challenged. I don't play any instruments.. However I can't resist playing "Air Guitar ( especially Bass) and Drums" along with my favorite tunes.
That's okay. I had an electric keyboard for music to learn how to do piano when I was in school. As a gift to my brother, I gave the keyboard to him and he's been using it at his house.
I chose guitar, drums and saxophone to listen to only as I prefer popular music. I’d love to have learned to play guitar though.
The most 'Fun' I ever had was with a Glockenspiel.... I have also used a Wobble Board and a Rainmaker.
I Have Tried a Guitar..... F-F-F-f-flammin' thing! and a Keyboard, I even Owned one, for a time (I gave it to the Local Theatre.... anybody Remember them?) How did I 'Get On'? Well, I believe... I would have had More Luck- getting FIRE from two damp sponges!
One of my Nieces can 'Play The Trumpet', or so I'm told... I haven't actually Seen her for Many Years. Oh well.....
AndrewT
I love bagpipes and traditional Scottish music
It would have to be the triangle for me,because that’s all I ever got to play when I was at school,I was rubbish at music,😂but I’ve always regretted not being musically minded, as I love all types of music.🌈
Just a wonderful instrument, wish I could play myself xx
Hermes123.Drums/ all types but especially Military due to the beat, I use to like
Johnny Dankworth in his Day.
😎
I generally enjoy most music . Also enjoy playing a Concert Wurlitzer electronic organ .When exercising on my treadmill I play my favourite songs on a large TV screen it helps to make it more enjoyable and pass the time.
Love sound of acoustic guitar. Always wanted to learn the piano... maybe someday.
Give me Eric Clapton on guitar & vocals any time - and absolutely brilliant live. I had the joy of seeing him with various star backing bands when I lived in London.
That sounds great! When did you see Eric Clapton live?
I'd have to dig out old diaries to be certain but a number times in the 80s when he used to do a yearly block of shows at the RAH. I lived in London then and my sister used to come down from Scotland for a few days and the concert was our highlight. He always had really good backing musicians including people like Phil Collins and Andy Fairweather-Low. He still uses the latter for some of his live shows now - I've seen some of them on tv.
I love the electric guitar 🎸☮️☺️ I also love the violin piano and flute they all sound beautiful ❤️
What's your favorite songs for each one to be played using them?
I voted for saxophone. It's a very sexy instrument when played on songs like Walk Through Th e Night. I also love a guitar. Marti Pellow sings a version of Maggie May with just a guitar as back up and it's beautiful. I'm not so keen on violin but that's because my daughter chose to learn to play it. Badly!
I learned to play the piano and cello. I also love the sound of the clarinet. Singing is my first love though.
Cello
I played the tenor saxophone and I also love the trumpet (which my father played-he was years).
Piano went to lessons when I was going and I can't play now because of my arthritic twisted hands but play mouth organ sometimes yea those were the days 😦
Acoustic guitar...... Jimi Hendrix amazing talent gone too soon. piano......Liberace played with such ease and his talent created a novel of flowing notes.
violin.....Stradivarius played by a virtuoso is breathtaking.
Flute.....my favorite...the notes feel like beautiful butterflies 🦋 in flight.
I love hearing it so much.
I love classical music and always have. As a young divorced mother I had to carefully budget but I always found money to take my four year old son to the symphony in LA and the Hollywood Bowl. Thirty years later I was more financially secure and I had the joy of taking my grand-son from 4 years old on to the symphony. Both boys grew up loving classical music and my grandson became very proficient on the piano, Unlike me, they both also loved the popular music genre including rock ,. punk and the whole gamut. My grandson and I spent a lot of afternoons together and we would look for thrifty, community things to do. We discovered there was a harp class at the music department at the local university and for twelve years we attended their free yearly recitals. Thus, I also very much love harp music but recitals are rare. He is off to college in Canada and I miss our concerts!!
I love listening to classic guitar and the violin.
Voice is an instrument, not listed here. It is the most natural, of all instruments. The voice can be trained, and cultivated, so that it is capable of making some of the most beautiful sounds I’ve ever heard. Voice is my choice! I may be prejudiced, because I majored in Voice, in College! Actually, I enjoy most musical instruments, and have played piano, and percussion, also!
I play guitar but can appreciate many other instruments. Well, maybe not the kazoo...
What songs do you play on the guitar?
Mostly rock and blues. I'm learning jazz now which is really fun. I play a lot in my free time because it gets me out of my head. I played in a cover band years ago but I can't commit to that now.
illan pipes
I bought myself a ukulele a few years ago and joined a group. I can’t play it very well but I enjoy it
Harp.
I like the sound of a piano and violin in classical music as it sounds very beautiful and very calming. I also like the sound of the piano in Songs of Praise with the hymns beautifully played and very calming. as it really lifts me.
Great Survey, A great way to lift peoples spirit in lockdown to find out what they are listening to. Plus to remind them to continue to listen to their music during pandemic to lift their spirits. xx
Thank you for saying that about the poll, Lotus-Blossom . That makes my day. I enjoy posting the polls and like being able to lift everyone's spirits. There are a lot of ideas for new polls coming in the next few days. Keep an eye out for them very soon.
Piano is very calming to me when I hear someone playing one.
That's alright. One thing I forgot to add was I also find the piano very soothing as well.
Thanks for mentioning me. I'm very touched. xx
You're welcome! Having a good evening tonight?
I'm having a nice evening with my mum and dad every day thank you for asking. I count my blessings as I still live with them god knows in what state of mind I would be in if I was on my own given my current circumstances with my health as it is ongoing at the moment.I hope you are having a good evening yourself. xx
Piano is my favourite, I particularly like Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag played by Vinheteiro and also Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2. I have been listening to Classic FM which helps me a lot in these uncertain times.🎼🎹🙂
I have Classic FM on most of the day- and night.I've discovered a lot of music on there that I didn't know. I absolutely love the Rachmaninov No2- reminds me so much of a person who is very special to me😊 And one of my favourite films: Brief Encounter! In fact I like a lot of the Russian composers😁🐰
I have to admit that I also have it on all day and night, it’s soothing if I wake up which I inevitably do. It’s good that it reminds you of somebody who is special to you. I also love Shostakovitchs’ Piano Concerto No. 2 the second movement. Without trying to be morbid, I’ve more or less decided that is the music I would like to have for my funeral. Just trying to plan ahead.🙂.
Which song is your favorite that he does?
I prefer orchestral and vocal music to solo instruments, although I do quite like some of the piano and violin concertos.
Thank you, Hidden for saying that about the poll. I appreciate it very much. Do you have a guitar? My brother took lessons when he was 13 years old and got his first guitar as a gift from our parents.
I totally agree about when to start learning to do certain instruments and other talents-- in general.
Didn’t we all have to play the recorder at school,or anyway make a noise with whatever we could make get hold of? I had piano lessons, practicing was a bit tedious, but worth it!
I didn't have to learn keyboarding until my High School years as a graduating requirement. The school insisted that all students had to learn some instrument/take a music class or they wouldn't let us graduate on time.
I learned recorder to a fairly good standard. When I was at college I studied early music for a year and we firmed a group to play 15th and 16th century music - I played bass recorder.
Do you remember any of the music you played at college MadBunny?🙂🎼
Mainly 15th 16th century dances- can't remember the composers. Susato was one of them. Oh and some John Dowland.
Thanks, I’ll have a look.🙂👍
Try this. I love the instruments of the period but they can be a bit of an acquired taste! I've been to a concert of this work at the Royal Festival Hall. My interest in renaissance music started through a lifelong love of Shakespeare - which started with O level English Lit many years ago (too many😁)
Thank you so much for taking the trouble, I’m on a steep learning curve to find out about the music of each period. I like Albinoni very much, and that has inspired me to learn more. 🙂🎼
My pleasure. A bit of Dowland for you. Originally for lute and voice but has been adapted for other instruments. Since I've been listening to Classic FM I've been discovering a lot of music I didn't know😁
Thank you. I agree, unfortunately most of the time it’s on in the background, but at night I am able to listen. I really do want to expand my knowledge. I can remember many years ago having a tiny part (amateur) in a production of one of the Mystery plays (with Peter Duncan from Blue Peter in the role of Jesus) and getting to like that music.🙂
Guitar for me.
I play a keyboard. I have a Yamaha at the moment.
