I take 40mg morning and evening. I had to have my dosage increased a couple of times before I got things balanced. (my surgery was 5 years ago). Of course everyone is different and there is no "right" presccription for all, just what works for the individual. There are a couple of other things that are worth keeping in mind.

1. Try to sleep slight elevated as this will assist with keeping reflux under control.

2. If you are taking omerprazole on a long term basis it is advisable to take a calcium citrate with vitamin D supllement as there is a long term effect on the bones of this type of medication.

hope that helps a bit.

Hi

After my op in February 2009, I recently found my acid problems were increasing and as a result I found myself going up from 20mg omeprazole morning and evening often to 40 and still having acid burn.

The doc suggested we try Lansoprazole, 15mg morning and evening. Result: an immediate and dramatic improvement, absolutely no more discomfort.

Just thought I'd share that.

Incidentally, I assume that Lansoprazole is the same as Omeprazole in terms of long term calcium depeletion..?

Hi Larry,

Youre right its a constant juggle with the ant-acids,and if all you Oesophageeans out there havent already got youre bedhead raised 4 to 6 inches ,its the one single thing that will improve bedtime ...you may look i bit like Wallace and Grommet sliding down the bed sheets ,but worth it .....

My knowledge of medication and their names is shaky, because I can never remember them! Omeprazole and lansoprozole are both proton pump inhibitors, meaning that they reduce / stop the stomach producing acid. The absence of that acid prevents the ionisation of the calcium needed for maintain full strength in the bones, so the answer should be that the long term calcium depletion issue would be the same, whichever brand you have.

Hi, I'm 18 mths post op. I gave up using both of them almost straight away as neither of them worked. Not really had a problem, I occasionally have a to eat a bit of dry toast at night to keep the acid at bay. I'm pretty sure that being strick about eating little and often is the key - for me it is anyway. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has something that works instead of using Omeprazole and lansoprozole.

Hi Mark

I like you found Omeprazole/Lansoprazole as much use as a chocolate tea pot. I use Zantac 120mg, a shot of Gaviscon and chew a rennie before going to bed and I can sleep all night laying flat with no acid. I think it is all about thinking outside the box with a little experimentation and luck in what you find works for you.

Regards,

Steve

Hi, i take one 30mg lansoprazole every morning and it seems to do the trick and with no side affectes at all,

I didn`t know about the calcium depletion so thanks for that.
