Omeprazole 80mg

Hi, I am a 52 yo male (if you are allowed to say male these days!) suffered from terrible acid reflux from about 17 yo, used to eat a packet of rennines every day anyway 2 years ago was diagnosed with Barrett’s and a small T1 cancer which was removed via EMR, have had 9 rounds of RFA since and at the moment all seems well except I need 80mg of Omeprazole daily.

My consultant has booked me in for a 24hr ph test but when the appointment came through it said I need to stop taking the omeprazole for 7 days prior and all anti acid medication 48hrs before. I understand why but for me this is impossible as even if I miss a dose the burning pain returns quickly and I wake in the night chocking and unable to breath, when I spoke to my consultants secretary (can’t get to speak to him) was told consultant had said “well cancel the test then as it won’t work”.

I was wondering if anyone else had been in this position?

Many thanks.

Ed

I know when you have the PH test you can take gaviston right up to taking the testI was wondering if you could help me

I have had problems with my mouth and tongue burning also now my throat burning this has been going on for about five years this is always bad at night when sleeping I know that somethings acid comes up as a feel like it chokes me and wakes me up I know it is reflux

I have had a ph manometry and 24 hours ph study test twice in the last four years the last one about 4 months ago they say it was borderline I also had a gastroscopy Which they said was normal I take Omeprazole which does not help I still have a burning in my mouth and throat is so bad that I don’t sleep any more I was wondering if you had had symptoms like that with your acid reflux

I don’t know if it acid reflux or burning mouth syndrome I would appreciate any help you could give me

I hope you get your ph test done soon I know you are allowed to take gaviston

Right up to the test maybe that would help

Hope you feel better soon

Thanks

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the reply and sorry to hear of your problems. How much omeprazole are you taking and at what time as it does sound like reflux is causing your problems?

Hi Steelee

Fully understand about concerns over coming off the omepazole and you're prob on it for life.

Do you know why you need the ph test? If it's to measure acid and you need ppis to control damage around the oesophagus... surely the test should be measuring how effective the acid control is to prevent further damage? So in theory you shouldn't need to come off them.

But I could be wrong. You could try gaviscon or taking slippery elm tea which is supposed to provide some protection.

Is the information you got in a standard format or personalised to you? Might be worth directly ringing the department where you are having it done if you can and explain your circs.

Hi, they are looking at an operation to tighten the muscle at the top of the stomach as say 80mg of omeprazole is too much for long term use.

I am on Omeparazole daily and wasn't having many issues, but started getting the odd night where I'd wake up acid burning in throat. They have given me Ranitidine now in addition to the Omeparazole. I tried it for a month and it seemed to help.

I was prescribed omeprosal after ivor lewis, I took it for 4 yrs. Eventually I weaned myself off it by changing my diet. It took months. To expect you to stop dead for 7 days is impossible in my opinion.

Ed,

I've not been in this situation. Suggest talking to the testing centre / nurses as they may have an option for you.

I am post Ivor Lewis and suffer from episodes of this burning you describe. I do take Omeprazole (40mg twice daily). But, for "belt and braces" I try to have a tablespoon of vanilla ice cream before bed and, if I've feel like I'm going to have reflux I'll have a mouthful of ice cream on/off through the day.

Could suggest trying some diet coke .... or perhaps instead of ice cream some hummus .....

Hope you can find a solution (or, at worst a coping strategy)
