Alcohol

With no ulterior motive I have in the back of my mind seeing a post sometime that our revised plumbing leads to a poorer absorption of alcohol. Am I imagining this or has anyone any information?

I am 16 months post Ivor Lewis, I drink two or three bottles of beer at lunchtimes and have no side effects. I do not drink in the evenings or with my meals. I might have the odd glass of wine but overall I do not think that alcohol leads to plumbing problems in fact the more liquid you can drink the better. Everything in moderation.

I was told it is fine to drink alcohol in moderation but to be aware as you feel the affects much quicker and that has been certainly true for me.

I’ve had total gastrectomy in January. If I have a glass of red wine or a gin and tonic I can feel a little merry even half way through it so I tend to have the Just one or two drinks over the course of an evening out (and I enjoy every sip!)

Thanks Louise. That's what I think I picked up from someone's earlier post that the effect of alcohol was magnified.

I'm a year on from my op (not the Ivor Lewis, but the full belly button to armpit type of oesophagectomy) I'm not a big drinker, partial to a Baileys or two. As for beer I have had upto three pints, but then you start to feel a bit full.

I drink a couple of pints once each week and a glass of wine on most evenings and neither seems to affect my ability to eat. I am not sure if I am more affected than hitherto by the alcohol but I had my op 14 years ago so comparison is tricky.

Yes I also was told what Mrs 1972 was told and it's true for me the alcohol works quicker !

I was warned that alchol would have effects quicker and it does.

Also I used to like white wine now it tastes awful and I am talking about ones I used to like.

I am going on 2yrs post op

Thanks. I'm inclined to think you are right although fortunately white wine still tastes OK!

A leaflet available from the Oesophageal Patients Association suggests a small sherry wine or even beer half an hour before eating can stimulate appetite but to use caution as your alcohol tolerance level may be altered
