I have recently started to suffer night sweats, whether it is a post-op reaction I don't think so because I'm 2 years since. I wonder if is related to my diet. I am desperate now because it ruins my sleep.anyone out there with similar problem?

I have the same issues and for me its due to getting low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) overnight - try eating something with a little sugar and some complex carbs (jam on wholemeal toast) as close to bedtime as you can handle and see if that helps keep your sugars high enough over night.

if you have a blood glucose monitor when you wake up with the night sweats test yourself to see if this in fact the issue - its worth mentioning to your specialists though - they might refer you to an endocrinologist or diabetic specialist for more investigation

It is possible that it might be to do with your insulin balance. Does it happen at the same interval after your last meal each time? I agree with Spanner16 about going for a proper analysis, but try keeping a food diary, and eating a diet as it you are a diabetic. There may be something in your diet that is causing most of the problem. A specialist dietician from the original hospital may also be able to help.

Hi there,

I frequently suffer from night sweats as well and it doesn't seem to matter what I have been eating, I am inclined to think (and this is only a personal observation as I am like you 2 -3 years post op IL) that it is more to do with when you eat and the volume.

I don't agree with eating as late as possible because I think that the food just lays around gurgling and producing gas.

Why not experiment with the timing of your last meal in relation to bedtime. I usually go to bed around midnight and I try to eat no later than 8.30 and I make sure it is a small portion.

Good luck with it anyway but aren't the sweats awful! and made even worse with this hot weather.

Regards

Richard

Hi, did you have any complications during your hospital stay for Oesophagectomy?

I am only four months post IL Oesophagectomy, so not helpful input on timeline basis but positive to hear your experience. As this may help people like me coming there at some point.

I had ECMO treatment and because of that my body thermostat was destroyed. It took maybe a month to settle the temperature fluctuations (these were extreme to begin with) and when hot lots of sweat and when cold even 4 sheets wouldn't do any good. But weaned off eventually when body got the necessary control back. Glad.

Secondly I still get sweat after meals often when too hot food or too much quantity. But this is hit and miss and I am too lazy to keep a diary.

I can recall only one time I got night time sweat I last month.

One thing comes to my mind when you mention diet. I assume you must have tried all the food items you could within last two years. In which case the food was proven to be ok without issues, unless this was something new or some new underlying issue here?
