I am going to have to get a topper for my mattress and finding it hard to decide between a memory foam or a latex model. Does anyone have any experience of a latex model please with regarding to comfort?

Thanks,

Charlie

I've never tried a latex model, but the memory foam toppers are bliss.

I'm lying on one now, having just dumped again.

They are really soft and comfortable, just what you need if you're loosing weight.

Actually, I'm cheating, I've got the one off the spare bed as well, folded in half under my bottom, where most of the pressure is. Both these toppers are years old and a bit saggy, which is why I need two.

Hi Charlie,

I have a memory foam topper, buy one that is at least 9cm thick, they are really comfy, when I couldn't sit on a chair without a cushion as I had lost so much weight i could sit all day in bed. and I didn't get any bedsores,

Take care

Thanks Lizzy. The deepest I can find as a topper is 7 cm. Do you think that would do? can't find 9cm anywhere as a topper only as a mattress.

Memory foam is man made and can be quite hot to sleep on. It can harbour dust mite and takes time to respond to pressure. Latex is a natural product, is dust mite resistant and responds instantly when you turn over. Cooler to sleep on. Best thing is to go and try both in a shop.

Nic,

I'm not sure Charlie is well enough to go shopping.

Thanks for your replies. I have a memory foam on the spare bed but did find it too hot to sleep on. I am unable to find anyone local who stocks a latex topper, within 150 miles, so unfortunately can't go and test one. I did phone a London Internet company, the topper weighs 12 kilo and is 5 cm thick. I would not be able to return it and its 200gbp so a considered purchase! I don't know whether to gamble and risk it or get a good quality memory foam despite the heat problems. So would love to hear from someone who actually has a latex one!

Apologies. I wasn't implying that Charlie went 'shopping'. Was thinking more that he might be able to be driven to a shop, see the mattresses and leave.

Very lucky in that I am still able to get to the shops! My car is a lifeline and I am hoping to get one of the new electric lightweight scooters too. As a female "Charlie", shopping is in the blood :-) though I do spend longer in bed than I really like nowadays. Roll on spring.

I have lost nearly half my body weight, 11stone 10lb down to 6stone 4lb and just out of hospital after 2 days for investigations. Cameras everywhere, and all I know is I lost another 6lb while there :-/

The worst thing I came home with was sore bones. I was once described by my GP as bones with skin on, in other words a 'carcass' and that was a year ago.

I only stopped hurting when I got out of the Hospital bed and into mine that has 2 Memory Foam mattresses on that I bought from Dunelm Mill, a household store and they have a site if you google it. They were reasonably priced and when I lay my bones down they wrap around me and snuggle me to sleep. It is a "suck it and see" item as you dont know how they will work for you till you try, but I love mine which is great as it is hard making a State Pension stretch to luxury items. Good luck and hope you make the right choice first time ;-) Babs xx

Hi Babs,

That's a huge weight loss , has anyone been able to offer you any worthwhile treatment yet? I have gone from 10.1/2 presurgery, then 7.4 . managed to claw my weight up to 8.2 by having small meals with slim fast drinks made with full cream milk in between the meals. Since my reoccurrence I have gone back to postoperative weight. I can no longer stand having my photo taken and its so hard trying to keep warm and comfortable isn't it. Thanks for replying and I really hope all the tests etc are worthwhile and provide some answers for you.

i Charlie.

Thanks for that message, the first sign of support I have had in 2 years and 10 months about my weight loss. I so appreciate your message. Mine is so visible yet I am looked away from rather than offered support. I have spent my life savings going abroad as no one would look into it, let alone the bowel cancer removed there in 2010, and it has just been removed again. Good job I kick and scream, they wanted me to wait another 2 years??

I have Gastric and Duodenal Ulcers, Gastritis, Oesophagitis, Gastric Oesophageal Reflux Disease, H. Pylori and slow Gastric Emptying, (querie Gastroparesis) that was all found when I went to Germany where I used to live for many years (Army). I reflux and throw up daily, and usually cope, but the green bile is the worst, burns far worse than just vomiting or yellow bile. It is like nothing will stay in me no matter what i try.

I am concerned about the Oesophagus as my dad died of Oesophageal Cancer age 64 and my sister died with Stomach Cancer aged 55. I dont think I have got either but would like them to treat me one of these days and look into it properly so I DONT get hit with something along the way. So far it has been a case of;

TEST, DIAGNOSE AND GO AWAY...

I asked about treatment and the Surgery said they did not know what to do...???

I think there is something wrong there....I am running out of money so I am glad I have just got a Gastroenterologist who is the buisness and says he believes it is Familiel so I may not be on my own in my thinking and wanting to monitor it at shorter intervals than 5 yearly.

You hit every single point there about the weight loss. My top half sweats like I am in a fever whilst from the legs down it is like they are sitting in a freezer without my knowledge.

My underwear belongs to a 10 year old and cardigans 9-10 year old. You can immagine how hard it is to buy clothes that look good and at 62 (coming on 35) I have to be pretty strong when I get comments about wearing clothes from Joe Browns Site...lol. ;-)

Sadly my husband couldnt cope with it so I have a double fight on my hands, getting well and getting him back. I am glad you have managed to get your weight back though, as I know what a nightmare it is.

I have coppied your food comments to a drop down doc as I am out of ideas. I think if i read 5 sites full of info, and get one tip to put on my list then it was worth it, so I hope you don't mind. I did notice the dairy stuff tho and one of my problems is that even before this I could never tollerate fat or dairy produce so i am really stuck there.

If you have any other tips or tricks eating wise, I would be greatful and would try what I could.

My 'stomach' probs will be 3 years old on 28 May, and I get to see a dietician on 20 May.

Took a long time to get there so I hope she is helpful.

Fortisip takes one look at my stomach, has a quick punch up, then flees fast...so i hope the Dietician, when I see her, has more to offer me :-/ If you have anything useful i dont mind if you email me as I can see emails better on my mobile if i am in bed better than picking links up. Email is bmwolfe@btinternet.com

I am greatful for your comments. Take care, and hold on to that body of yours..

Questions are, if you dont mind,

What surgery did you have?

Were there any problems after?

And has it improved things for you?

Hoping you continue to do well, ;-0 Babs <3

Charlie...i think I may have just dropped a hint about my short term memory loss....lol.

I just repeated myself, but I didnt know how the message was connected. If i cant see it it doesn't exist, so sorry, giggle, but whats this new lightweight scooter you mentioned?? Sounds good. I am housebound as i live in a village that is the highest point in the county, I get down to the Post office but cant get back ;-) need a taxi to get 300 meters.

I have heard good reports about Dunelm Mill for memory foam mattresses but do not use them myself
