Morning everyone..12 months has past since Ivor Lewis surgery..and feel good most of the time ..The only thing that bugs me Is my daily cup of coffee, each morning I look forward to my 1 weetabix, small glass of fresh orange juice, and my only 1 cup of decaf coffee..but that’s started to make me dump..I only have 1..don’t fancy it ,the rest of the day ..even cut out sugar ,and go for 1 sweetner....has anybody else had to cut out tea and coffee..is it the heat maybe 🤔 really gutted ,as I did look forward to my cuppa..today I will just try a glass of orange juice...just not the same 🥲

I can have coffee and tea, no problem but just about everything causes my dumping.

Dumping has no rhyme or reason. Drives me nuts not being able to resolve it .

I did overdo it with chocolate with my glass(s) 🙄of red wine, last night but should of seen that coming tbh..most other things are ok ..just hot drinks ..it must be hard if you are struggling with most things, even tho you know it will pass,it’s the most uncomfortable feeling..hope it passes for you soon ..how long since surgery?

I am 30 months post op.

Major complications which prolonged recovery.

I have dumping at least once a day. It’s dreadful but passes after about an hour. If I don’t eat , I feel fine. Eat and I pay.

Still here though!

Hopefully things change for you..we need to eat ,..I fall asleep 10 mins after most meals for about 15 mins ..oh the joys 😁

My brothers dump nearly everyday . Had gastrojejunostomy July 2019. His problem seems worse when he drinks soda or eats ice cream. Thanks for sharing you positive attitude.

Hi,it’s strange we all different..I’m ok with ice cream ..maybe that will change over time ..I do tend to stick to things I’m safe (tried and tested) with ..I’m ok with hot food..so who knows..I feel really well today, passing on this mornings coffee,so looks like that’s the future 😊

I couldn't drink coffee after my op because of dumping. It's now two years since my op and I have an occasional cup without any problems. I.m fine with tea but can't drink it hot I have to wait for it to cool down otherwise I get stomach cramps i.m the same with cold drinks as well even water from the fridge does it.

Maybe it’s the sugar from the orange juice?

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply tobehcets

Morning..I tried weetabix and just the orange juice yesterday..and was fine..so I’m now presuming it was the hotness of the coffee..I hadn’t thought of that tho..maybe try skipping that, and see what happens..but thank you for your answer..always good to have helpful suggestions 🙏🏻

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply tobehcets

I think you were quite right…can’t believe how much sugar is in it..I’ve cut it out ,and just have the decaf coffee..seems to have stopped 🙌🏻 thanks for the tip

MissRita profile image
MissRita in reply tobehcets

It is the sugar from the juice. Typically when a person has dumping syndrome the issue is or at least can be that these symptoms happen because your small intestine cannot absorb nutrients from food that has not been digested properly in the stomach. You are more likely to have dumping syndrome if you have had certain types of gastric surgery, like gastric bypass surgery. Oddly enough people with diabetes or other issues including IBS etc. can have dumping syndrome. It’s awful to be sure.

Thanks ..this was 5 months ago now,I stopped the orange juice then and it stopped ..I do still get dumping, sometimes for no apparent reason,,but usually a 10 to 15 nap and it’s gone ..I found dehydration plays a massive part in reabilatation now

MissRita profile image
MissRita in reply totelford-hiker

Me too!!! Dehydration?? TELL ME MORE!

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply toMissRita

Not really a lot to say other than I never realised how much dehydration can affect you until now in feeling strange, weak, and what it can do..but drinking a lot more water (squash) than ever before helps in most of my well being now ..😊

Hi - I’m not sure about your intervals - I’d have the cereal and juice then wait 45 mins for the cuppa - I’d dump if I had all 3 round about the same time - just a bit much - I’m nearly 6yrs on and suffered terribly from dumping for 3yrs - with perseverance and the keep trying bit I can now eat pretty much most things but still get the odd dumping session for no reason - little naps are the new norm at 55 for me 😆 - all the best

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply toMolly14

Yes.that sounds like a good idea too..I’ve just done pretty much that ,having a small decaf warm coffee.,funnily enough about 45 mins..I’m sure the orange juice has made me on the verge this morning (went drowsy)..it definitely is trial and error..I too had 3 ,10/15 min naps yesterday..fitted in between visits for Father’s Day 😂

Tanktank profile image

I am nearly three year post op and like most have suffered and still suffer dumping. A cream tea gift for Father’s Day and I dumped within 15 minutes. For all meals I do not drink and eat at the same time. You may find that orange juice and coffee are simply washing your weetabix through your rearranged pipe work. Try and not drink 30 minutes either side of eating.

Thanks..I do try ..and if I drink too much ,fills me up too..so would struggle to do both..I think each morning,I think I’m normal and keep trying to do same routine as before the op ..🙈when will I learn

Hi Telford-hikerI am 8 yrs post I or Lewis and I still suffer with Dumping. I have been told by my consultant that you can have late dumping as well as early dumping, he also said not to eat and drink within 20 minutes of each other, also if you overload your tummy with too much liquid I've found it makes me feel quite nauseated, I too have found if my drink is too hot I suffer pain. I don't drink caffinated tea / coffee, haven't for years, but even if I have a decaff coffee sometimes it can cause trouble. Maybe try sipping your juice with your breakfast and have your coffee mid morning, I find I need to sip water with meals. Hope this helps.

I think I need to take everything in stages ,as you say in the morning..have to get up earlier to get it all in😆..I did few days back at work, and by 2pm couldn’t keep my eyes open..😆..luckily I’m self employed and working with an old school freind,,who has also had cancer..so understands I may need more breaks than the ‘normal person’ ...

Think it's more likely to be the juice as it causes acid reflux, I am four years post Ivor Lewis and still occasionally get problems.

Popsic profile image
Popsic in reply totinabrown196

I wish my problems were occasional, I still get dreadful reflux, in fact had it early Sunday morning, cried with the pain, can't figure out what is causing it, I've put on 1.5 stone since my op which I know isn't good, but trying to lose it is soo hard, but I'm still here! Grateful for that every day.

Coffee is a trigger for me too. I miss it so much so occasionally try it. My solution has been decaffinated and only a cup, not a mugful, drunk slowly without the old cake or biscuit. Just can’t eat and drink at the same time!

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply toSingforyoursupper

Yeah same .I miss it was only having 1 decaf..I think I’m goona have 1,and face the consequences 😅

grandylynda profile image

I used to love black coffee. After surgery I can't stand it. I only drink decaf coffee as lattes and then not cows milk. For me it is eating and drinking to gether that causes the problem. Also have to sip slowly. Its a full time job really on top of needing 6 small meals a day rather than 3 larger ones. I am often to be seen out with or water bottle or lidded cup as I think I would never get out otherwise! Indulged in cream tea on fathers day and regretted it but that was probably the cream. You get used to how things work best for you eventually.

We just been away for a week up north and the Lake District, climbed Scafell pike..plus other big walks..things that make me feel alive..and only 2 bouts of dumping..I make sure on big days out I only eat things I know are safe ..keeps me positive too

Hi telford-hiker, My husband can’t give up his morning coffee either especially he has already cut down on wine (no beer at all, too fizzy).

He drinks a half size coffee (milk without sugar) then sits 15mins before he has his breakfast. He says, this was he doesn’t get the dumping syndrome. He can’t drink it with breakfast. Likewise in the afternoon, he will have another half cup of coffee then 15 mins later gave his afternoon tea (a Clif Bar or a banana).

I remembered he had is IL just before you had yours.

Hope you’ll eventually find your rhythm with coffee.

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply toNotknowmuch

Hi..I’ve cut out the orange juice ,never realised so much sugar in it…seems to be much better…not the wine tho..😂 and substituted lager for guiness…perfect..and it’s good for you 😁😉

Give it a little while and coffee May well be back on the menu. 11 years on and I have had episodes of not being able to eat dairy, sweets, pasta, rice, fried food , hot chocolate, coffee, citrus, but it all changes over time. Fingers crossed that it's not too long before coffee is ok again 😄

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply toliz_crisp

Hopefully 1 day…can get by without dumping 😥 doesn’t sound like it tho 😊👍🏻👍🏻

I'm surprised you can pinpoint it, my dumping seems to have no real pattern and strangely sometimes I really feel it's been brought on by concentration although I can't really see how that would work. Coffee on the other hand gives me no problems at all to the best of my knowledge anyway but most of the time it seems to be overeating that causes it but as others here have rightly said, we are all different and that's the beauty of these type of forums.

telford-hiker in reply to

Hi..this was near the very start of my journey..and everybody had pin pointed it for ,saying the orange juice is high in sugar,so I stopped that and the morning dump stopped..However there’s been no logical reason since..I can see somethings coming but usually fall asleep after eating most things ,this is my new dumping..I’m finding that keeping well hydrated cushions the blow..Maybe it’s the next phase for me anyway..good luck on your journey

Hi I’m 2 yrs post IL and eating and drinking together is an absolute no no… so perhaps have your coffee then food a little later? I also find that sloppy foods make me dump , yoghurts , soup etc so with yoghurts I add muesli and or fruit and I’m fine…

telford-hiker profile image

Hi ..I’m fine now with 1 protein weetabix and a mug of de caf coffee..it’s what gets me out of bed in the morning 😊 stay safe

Hi I'm 20months post IL I also haves coeliac disease and that restricts my diet. Coffee and chocolate give me dumping. When I first came home from hospital ih had early and late dumping several times a day my dietitian sent me a food and symptom diary. In t h e beginning I couldn't have any dairy and just one mouthful too much to eat and that will trigger dumping too. It does get better but sometimes I get dumping for no reason at all. I think it's just something I am learning to live with and at least I'm living and at 74 that feels so good.

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply toKentishred

Yep we all seem to have different reasons for dumping,..although the symptoms do get better ..I can eat chocolate, and I do every day 😁..but most other sweet stuff gets me within 10 minutes..So glad your ok tho..I say the same ..it’s better than the alternative..😊 good luck

it could be the heat i was advised by the Macmillan nutritionist to not eat or drink anything at or above 60 degrees, also when i do try to eat or drink anything hot since my ivor lewis procedure[ which will have been 3 years this January } my throat/food pipe feels like it constricts in on itself making it harder to swallow , but that could be down to fluid build up that i have at Op site ! but i have been advised this can be a normal reaction to the procedure & i will have to have a stent fitted at op site to alleviate the narrowing this fluid has caused.

telford-hiker profile image
telford-hiker in reply toJDMC16

Thanks that was 5 months ago now..learning to cope with things ..got over that but still dump most days..but mainly resolves itself with a 15 minute nap 😴😂
