I had the op. for oesaphageal cancer 8 years ago, and occasionally suffer from waking up choking from reflux. I am considering a hip replacement op. and am wondering about the effects if this occurs whilst under anesthetic.

I am in a very similar position 10 years post op , as long as the surgeon and anesthetiser is aware of this they will monitor your position very closely and you should have nothing to fear but..... Make sure you tell them !

My wife had a hip replacement two years ago. They did it under an epidural anesthetic and she was awake the whole time.

I have had this type of anethetic and remember hearing what was happening. I don't fancy listening to the sound of bones being sawn.

I've had two inguinal hernias, resulting from coughing caused by the self-same problem that wakes you). Both were undertaken by the upper GI surgical team that performed my Ivor Lewis, so they were aware of the potential problem. Bottom line: full anaesthesia is no problem when the team's informed! Hope it goes well.
