Heartburn « selective »

Beyond an overall heartburn problem managed with proper diet and 20mg omeprazole every morning.

I have an unusual ? Issue

I can drink white wine but not red

I can drink sprite but not coke

I can drink vodka (including in spicy Bloody Mary version) but not whisky...

They all cause terrible heartburn even with the treatment

Of course I have adapted but I was wondering if other had this « selective »  problem.

Is there an allergy factor?

Thx for your input

Yes I have had this problem with certain foods for nearly 8 years now.

Continue to keep track of what causes the problem & avoid. That's what I do !

Cheers

Whisky and at least some red wines are aged in oak barrels and as a result contain "congeners" from the oak. Some people have digestive problems with these. Not sure about the others you list, but my guess is it's a constituent problem and a physiological reaction as opposed to an allergy (an immunological response).

All the best

Did you have esophagectomy? Or do you suffer from this without any diagnosis?

You are only managing or trying to manage the symptoms and not cure the root cause problem/s.

Persistent GERD symptoms indicate in my non-medical view that the sphincter in your Oesophaegus is not functioning as it should and this is anatomical issue, whoever way you manage perhaps you might end up getting silent (alkaline) reflux, which one GI surgeon has told me that is more dangerous than Acidic reflux.

If I were you I would persist for GI referral if not already investigated and diagnosed accurate and precise root cause.

Hi

I was wondering why you say that Silent Reflux is "alkaline" reflux, when it's acid (stomach acid).

Silent reflux is when the stomach acid rises above the Oesophagus and pools in the throat at night. The acid can damage the throat while we sleep. There may not be any symptoms until after damage is done. That's why it's called "silent " Reflux.

Rising stomach acid damages the Oesophagus in people with GORD (usually due to a huatus hernia) but in people with also Laryngopharyngeal Reflux ( silent reflux) acid damage affects parts of the throat.

An alkaline substance (such as bicarbonate of soda ) would neutralise the acid and help reduce the risk of damage.
