Can any of you tell me how to get the horrible burning and taste out of your throat after your bike comes up? It took over 2 hours to get rid of it so I could go back to sleep. I learned alot from your answers, will try them. I just need to get rid of it after it affects you.

Thank you!

It sounds simple but the ONLY way to be as sure as possible you will avoid bile reflux in the first place is to sleep with your upper body elevated and don't eat before bedtime, I never found anything to take away the burning it had to subside on its own.

I've never found anything to take the burn away, so I'll be interested to read other people's suggestions. The best I've managed to reduce the burning sensation is to gargle with luke warm herbal tea (do not swallow as that will only bring up more bile) and eat a small quantity of sticky porridge (which is very soothing). When it happens, which thankfully is rare these days, I'm usually up for about an hour before I can go back to bed.

Hello Dix,

are you sure that it's bile? I get this burning feeling only with acid, when it comes up the throat. To avoid this I take pantoprazol, otherwise I will get an inflammation. As to bile, the taste is bitter and makes me feel a bit sick. But it's not burning.

As to sleeping with the head and chest elevated, yes, this is recommended as the best solution. However, I get back pain from this sleeping position and instead of a wedge I simply sleep with two cussions. For some weeks now, I've take ranitidine before going to sleep, it's getting better with acid and bile reflux. (Maybe by chance, ranitidine is not considered to work for bile. Cholestyramin could be an option, but so far I've not tried as my doctor thinks it's side-effects are not worth the try.)

Cheers, Monika

Hi, I am nearly 11 years post op of a total gastrectomy..elevation can help but doesn't really stop bile reflux although it does get better with time, there isn't anything really tht can get rid of tht horrid taste & burning and no amount of medication has helped me personally..with trial and error i have found tht having a iced drink of water of about 1/4 pint has virtually stopped my reflux at night and i only get it occasionally these days..i have always neen told by my doctor tht when you get reflux the best way to get rid of it is to eat something to push the bile/acid back down and tht has worked for me also..

Trying to eat something hurts like hell because if the burning in your throat..but after 10/15 mins it will subside..

May i just add that i always have a snack before i go to bed, a couple of Ryvita or a lil sandwich etc and found this also helps to stop my acid..

What works for one may not work for another but its worth a try..
