In short, after stomach surgery, some patients may have what is commonly known as dumping syndrome. Without a stomach to hold the intake of food and fluids, there is no way to regulate the amount of food entering the intestine. You no longer have a reservoir to hold food so that it can gradually enter the small intestine. Instead, after a meal, the food may be “dumped” too quickly into the bowel. This may result in cramping and pain. When sugars and starches that you have eaten are dumped into the bowel, they may act like sponges, rapidly absorbing water from the body into the intestine. This leads to a number of symptoms including diarrhea, low blood sugar and feelings of weakness or dizziness.
There are 2 types early and late with early normally occurring within 15-30 minutes of food intake and late occurring after 3-4 hours Personally I suffer on an irregular basis still after 8 years post op Ivor Lewis. Hope this helps a little
Hi carol well it means your stomach completely empty’s out and you have to be near a toilet ASAP, mine starts with tummy noises and hearth beating fast and feeling clammy , not the most pleasant feeling but that’s my version of dumping syndrome, I hope it helps you. Tina x
Sugar passes through quickly and you get a spike bit like a diabetic. You can get palpatations, feel faint, eyes blurry, feel sick and sometimes need urgent dash to loo!! Sugar and high fat can be problem. I carry Dextrose tablets that can help if i feel one coming on.
