I have had a feeling in the back of my throat for some time and each month it feels worse , like my throat is narrowing
Yes I do. It tends to come and go from day to day. AT it's worst I cannot get anything to stay down and will have to resort to sticking my fingers down my throat, then I will be fine.
I do have to have fairly regular dilations (stretches) and am actually due another next week. I am not sure if the two are linked but suspect that they are.
It is like a sort of spasm or contraction and usually happens when I would least want or expect it. That makes me think it also maybe a mental issue. I have noticed that it will often happen if I am really looking forward to eating. As the meal time approaches I get the "rising feeling' then when I actually try to swallow, I can feel it being pushed back up, like trapped wind. It can be very uncomfortable. I do not understand why (If I make myself sick) everything immediately relaxes and I am back to normal?
I am now three years post op and this has become something of a routine, in that I no longer panic when it happens.
Please let me know what you discover? I shall mention it next week to my surgeon who is doing my stretch.
Good luck.

I wonder if it is to do with vagus nerve issues? Or perhaps the reaction of a bit of surgical scarring on a nerve? If it happens when you are getting hungry, I wonder whether it might be some kind of reaction to ghrelin which triggers hunger feelings and is probably a reaction travelling up the nervous system?
I do not know what anyone might do about it, other than perhaps trying something like amitriptyline that might subdue nerve reactions a bit?
As you will have worked out by now, I have no real idea, but it will be interesting what your surgeon thinks. And it is a compromise on your quality of life around eating, so your situation does deserve some investigation and thought by the specialists to see if it can be resolved.
Also important to leave plenty of time between eating and drinking, especially hot drinks. I find a little wine with the meal is OK but otherwise I leave at least 30 minutes between eating and drinking.
Like Bruce I suffer with swallowing of both food and fluids and often regurgitate the first 2 or 3 mouthfuls of food after which I am okay. Do get the stuck feeling and pain in the oesophagus plus the bringing up of bile. I had a total gastrectomy just over 5 years ago now and one does get used to what's happening. I did have several dilations a couple of years back but since then told all clear although do suffer with inflammation of the oesophagus. Also like Bruce I find making myself sick does help but this is in relation to bile reflux that I get quite badly on some days but one does get used to things..
Yes, I have this and often feel like Im choking. The only thing that works for me is Gaviscon advance liquid immediately after food.
I have this sensation, I miss being able to gulp down a cold drink, ok a cold pint of beer. I find hot drinks easier & if eating I match the temperature of the drink with the food. Cold (room temperature; chilled drinks are not good) with salads and a hot drink with cooked food, a few sips helps the food go down. I know they say not to drink whilst eating but it helps me. That said sometimes I feel the throat is closing & I have to stop eating or switch to something like fruit. I just cannot get enough fruit and that was never like me!
If anyone has any resolutions to this it would be great to hear. I too am skeletal and joke with my friends but it’s very demoralising, I would love to put some weight back on.
